In-home lock-boxes/safes

Hey all... I did a search, but couldn't come up with anything regarding this subject... maybe I was searching for the wrong keywords. *shrug*
Anyway... I was wondering if anyone around here had any idea as to the law regarding lock boxes and safes within one's home.
Meaning... if, for instance, one's house or apartment was searched legally (warranted search) would that include access to said locked security box? If not, would they take it and later find the means to warrant opening it?
Hypothetically speaking..

I think it depends on the scope of the search. If they kick your door in they're probably taking your safe. If they come in to investigate loud partying or something else, and you let them in, I don't think they can mess with locked areas/things.

So in other words, if it is a warranted invasion, it won't make a difference... but if it's not, it's just a matter of the plain-sight law basically? (In which case it's pointless to have one as far as I'm concerned.)

The warrant, by law, has to say specifically what is to be searched, and what is to be siezed.
I would say that means they need to specify probable cause that something could be in your safe to fuck with it.

Well, the way things seem to go, I wouldn't be surprised if the cited probable cause was simply the fact that I had a safe... heh. "Why would you have a safe if there's nothing hidden in it?" :P

I hope not, I have faith in my safe, and people are getting raided left and right here.

i once asked an authority this question ( a LEO who comes in my job frequently) he responded with:
"You dont think cops come to your searching it for no reason, were not gonna go through all this trouble and find a safe and NOT get it opened or taken do you?"
And it makes perfect sense, lol its funny just to even think that because u have a safe and ohhh its locked up that the LEO IS just gonna say "shit we found a safe, cant open it or take it. we got to leave it alone" hAHAHA

Or better yet, throw an evening gown and some makeup on it and say it's your wife. They can't strip search your wife.

a warrant has to specify the locations to be searched and what is being looked for. if the warrant authorizes them to look for say... a stolen car, then they can't open a locked trunk like that. cops get around this by including things in the warrant that might be hidden anywhere.
a locked trunk can definitely help you though, for a few reasons:
1. it should help prevent civilians from getting into your private stuff. 2. when cops execute a search warrant, they are given some limited search powers to secure their safety. this includes searching the area immediately surrounding the arrest location for weapons or dangerous persons (with probable cause). a locked trunk would definitely be outside the scope of any such search. 3. unless you provide them with a key, the fact that the cops had to break open your locked container to get inside clearly establishes that you did not consent to have its contents searched. this might be helpful if the cops are tempted at any point to bend the truth a little on the issue of consent to search.

Get a bunch of those popcan safes and keep them in your fridge. Nobody will ever know, unless they get thirsty.

Hrm... that's not a bad idea. Either that or hide stuff in boxes of cereal (underneath a normal-looking inner bag with cereal in it.)
