Bacteria Endospore germination of rye berries

I have hade some rye soaking in water overnight. It's been about 16 hours and the water hasn't changed color yet. Is changed water color the only indicator of germination of bacteria endospores? Normally I would just wait 24 hours but I won't have much time later today to get this party started.
Will there be any notable differences if I start simmering the rye now instead of waiting 8 more hours?

I never like to soak anything more than 11 hours and even then sometimes the water content is too high. I use a pc though.

I didn't think simmering and PC'ing were mutually exclusive in Rye Berries, in fact I am sure of it, the "From Syringe to Print with Rye" Tek has you simmering and pc'ing.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot about that thread agar
I do have a PC, and yes I do plan on using it. I thought the soaking for 24 hours was to germinate bacteria endospores, and the simmering was where most of the water content was absorbed.
Hmmm...
Well I'm off to get this show on the road
