Yes, Yes another "?"
    #5373290 - 03/07/06 03:08 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Well I'm new to this, but I have done extensive research before even attempting this hobby. And after reading lots of posts the FAQ, and a Video "Mushroom growing made easy" (2003) I still have a few questions.

(1)
I have,(multiple) 1 pint jars colonizing and I have them at a perfect 85-87 degrees. yet they have grown slowly VERY slowly... On the video a 1 pint jar colonized in 14 days(with a strong rhizomorphs), Mine were about 70%. I know there are some variables to aid in the speed of colonization so I flipped the jars and lowered the temp by 2 degrees. still slooowwwww. its now been 28 days almost a month and some are still not 100%... Moisture maby? the jars show a droplet of water form when flipped,(bottom of jar now the top)

(2)
I pulled 2 jars out on the 15-18th day of colonization they were colonized all around the sides but the bottom never colonized..? It appeared as if the substrate was dry, that turned out to be true when I placed them in the terrarium. I felt it with my finger.... Dry from the PC because of watter splashing on the bottom and sides of jars which "cooked the substrate"?????

(3)
Most likely the most widely asked question but after all the searches and time researching this hobby..... My cakes are in the fruiting chamber for about 8-10 days and now show of fuzzy outgrowth or pins...

*how long until pins form on cakes - Max - Min - Days?
*how long until pins form on Casings (saw a post of a guy who got pins in a matter of days, 5 I think.) -Max - Min - Days?
*If the temp has risen to 80 a few times for about 30 Min's does that effect pin growth? or primordia?

Thx for any help provided.

1. Sometimes cakes take that long. I like to flip the jars at the end. Do you have good air exchange?
2. It shouldn't be too moist. More like a cake.
3. It all depends. It can be a few days to...never.

pinning for casings and cakes... 3-14days

80 is a little high for pin growth... might diminish it a little, but 30min wont do too much harm.

your inc chamber is likely a little too hot with the rH standing a little low. Optimal temps are 84-86, not 85-87.. Above 86 and your myc is dying. 70% is a good rH for incubation... the median of reducing contams and making sure your jars dont dry out...

are these pint PF tek jars? if they are you should know that pint jars and PF tek dont mix, use 1/2 pints for cakes.

the fuzzy outgrowth are rhizomorphs... hyphal knotting is the next stage just before pinning. If mycelial growth is continuing your likely not using enough pinning triggers, maybe the temp in your FC is too high.

The only other thing i could think of would be did ya pack your medium in? if so this will slow growth greatly.

happy Trails and GL to ya

Cool thanks for the info... I decided since no pins started after 11 days and the pf cakes seemed dry, to dunk them for a while... Then I will place them back into the FC. I will see how that goes. hopefully Ill get some pins....

Good idea! When you dunked them was it for 24 hours in the refrigerator? This will hydrate AND cold shock the myc.

Yep one for 6hrs and one for 12hrs.

Will these PF Cakes fruit now?

Casings have been out for about 14 days they gona pin soon? and if still nothing after 21-25 days is there a problem?

There is 3 spots on the casing that is "mounding up" like a small hill. ? They were put in the FC when mycelum was seen just under the casing layer. should I have wated untill it was on top of the casing layer?
