terrarium not building humidity past 75%
    #5373273 - 03/07/06 02:38 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

i built a poor mans terrarium. i am just testing it right now before i put anything in it. i have no cakes in the terrarium right now.
i have a tetra whisper 30-60 gal aquarium air pump hooked to two 18" bubble curtains under 4 1/2" of Hydrotron with water filled up only 2" from the bottom. my temps are 73-75f at 75%-80% humidity. i also have a very small hole drilled though the side for stale air to move out. why is water condensation not showing on the inside of the tub? what can i do to make this better for my cakes?

you probably need some perlite if you want a cheap, easy method of keeping a constant, high humidity

um, dood...

it seems to me that you turned a "poor man's terrarium" into anything BUT a poor man's terrarium.

it's easy to get confused when you're starting out...
but a sterilite/rubbermaid tub, a few bucks worth of perlite, and some water is all you need.

i think you surpassed the point, by FAR.

not to mention, your levels (temp/humidity) are gonna change quite a bit once you put your cakes in there.

too much thinking, not enough doing.

what did you mean "i think you surpassed the point, by FAR."
i thought i followed the poor mans pod info to the letter.

i didn't want to use perlite cause many people say it is messy and non reusable.

ok you have a PmP *poor mans pod*, I also have one, that air pump sounds pretty powerful, what size is your fruiting chamber?

That pump is for a huge, huge tub man, its more than likley moving too much air, mine is a 18 gallon tub and I have a 15 gallon air pump...

ill post some pics of mine also

you are only supposed to have 2-3 air exchanges per hour with more airflow than that your rh will drop.

Your fine although your pump may be slightly larger than you want introducing too much fresh air possibly. Cakes will not raise your RH and they do require very high RH 92-95% during fruiting. You have that hole stuffed with poly right? How long have you had the unit running it will take some time for conditions to stabilize as that hydroton will absorb moisture at first. Its good to use hydroton thats been soaked first to prevent this problem. I'm not sure what the others are referring to it sounds to me your FC is right on although it's needs it may need some tweaking. GL and welcome!

my tub is 19 gal. about or 73 quarts.....my hole is not stuffed with poly...it did not mention this in the building info....i have had the unit running now for many days and my hydroton has been soaked and rinsed before hand.

i think the hole in the side is killing your humidity.

plus a lot of hygrometers aren't 100% accurate either

my cakes are almost ready they are starting to grow on the bottom now.....i think they will be ready to fruit in 1 week....i really don't know what to do about the humidity not being high enough.....the 30-60 gal air pump has two outlets i split one of them into three paths and put a regulator on one end and left it not going to anything then i adjusted the regulator so it let out just enough air to the point that whatever air was left would make the bubble curtains bubble...(because you guys suggested my pump was pushing to much air)......still no condensation. i wanted to keep this air pump cause i plan on expanding in the future. please help guys i don't want to fuck up my first grow.
