Would You Let Someone Die?
    #5372574 - 03/06/06 10:01 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Would you let someone you loved die?

If you saw this person in pain, anxiety, suffering and depression every minute of every day don't you think it would be a moral obligation to let them make their decesion to rest? Don't I owe them this?

Couldn't be considered cruel and inhumane to make them live?

After a considerable amount of time, yes.

It depends if they want to die or not. If they would rather die than suffer, then have some compassion and pull the plug.

I agree. If someone wants to die for a long time, let him/her die.

If the end is getting near, and a person is kept alive by machines, I definitely think it would be right to let her go.

The wonderful poet Allen Ginsberg once wrote a poem about Death. He called it Father Death Blues.

Hey Father Death, I'm flying home
Hey poor man, you're all alone
Hey old daddy, I know where I'm going

Father Death, Don't cry any more
Mama's there, underneath the floor
Brother Death, please mind the store

Old Aunty Death, Don't hide your bones
Old Uncle Death, I hear your groans
O Sister Death, how sweet your moans

O Children Deaths, go breathe your breaths
Sobbing breasts'll ease your Deaths
Pain is gone, tears take the rest

Genius Death, your art is done
Lover Death, your body's gone
Father Death, I'm coming home

Guru Death, your words are true
Teacher Death, I do thank you
For inspiring me to sing this Blues

Buddha Death, I wake with you
Dharma Death, your mind is new
Sangha Death, we'll work it through

Suffering is what was born
Ignorance made me forlorn
Tearful truths I cannot scorn

Father Breath, once more farewell
Birth you gave was no thing ill
My heart is still, as time will tell.

Much love to you and yours, no matter what happens.

it's cruel to keep somebody, even if you love them so, to force them to continue living. let them go- set them free from this hell.

Speaking from first hand knowledge...Yes.

Imagine watching your mother lie in a hospital bed dying of cancer, with no control over her bodily functions, and unable to recognize her only son because the cancer has spread to her brain...seeing tears in her eyes because she is afraid and confused and yet still knows she is dying. Nobody deserves to experience that kind of suffering...

I was relieved to see her pass away...and would have flipped the switch myself sooner if given the chance.

Im sorry.

I think that I may have posed the question wrong.

Would you let someone kill himself or herself if you knew all they ever experience is pain, depression, fear, and suffering?

Is it wrong to do nothing to stop them?

Is it wrong to do something to stop them?

I wouldn't stop them. everybody makes their own choices for themselves concerning them remaining on this earth. but I would definently try to convince them otherwise. there is always a way out of pain and suffering, and while it may be difficult to show somebody this who has only known it, I would try within all of my power to save the soul... but whatever they do is their decision. nobodys forcing them to stay.

some people feel it is their time to leave, like they want to start all over or just get away. but there is always a light at the end of every tunnel & each new moment is a moment brimming with hope and relief. people have to see this instead of taking the easy way out.

There's the old saying: to know how to live well you must know how to kill and let die.

Keep your spine straight,
stay focused,
remember you are in life, intuit the love,
be there, be here,
and you'll know what to do.
I believe in you.
Getting through orgasmic release-and-pain, is a human specialty.

Assuming that the situation could not be corrected with medication/treatment...If that individual came to me and asked for reasons to live, I would provide as many as I could that applied to him/her..then if they still decided that they wanted to die, I wouldn't stop them.

That is a tough question? Would I let someone die? My first response is--it would depend on how bad the situation is. Then, as I pondered this question again, I concluded--I don't know. I have to be in the situation to live it, eat it, breath it. At this point in time, my response is no--I would not let someone die. However, that is subject to change if the need should ever arise. Very controversial question, critical thinking is always a challenge for me.

peace and love

One should have absolute and complete control over how their own body/mind functions- Now, some people will make bad decisions, and we can try our hardest to sway those decisions, but one should always have the final say over their own body/mind.

If someone is in enough pain to wish for death over continuing the torture of living, I would find it profoundly unethical to prevent them from taking their own life.
