Of line-dancing rednecks and rioting punkers...a San Bernardino story
    #5372490 - 03/06/06 09:42 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Some of you may know, some may not, but I am living in a hotel in San Bernardino right now.  It doesn't matter why, you just need to know I'm here for the sake of this story.

Last Saturday afternoon my co-workers and I were driving around San Bernardino trying to figure out what we would do that night (it being our only night off we wanted to get out and have some drinks that night).  We passed by the local fairgrounds and were amazed to see the entire area overrun with punkers.  I mean there were literally hundreds of them walking up and down the streets. Turned out that the "British Invasion" punk rock festival was in town and there was about 15,000 punks converged on downtown San Bernardino.

Now 25 years ago I would've fit right in at a punk rock festival, but lets face it...I walked away from the punk scene over 2 decades ago and now I'm pushing 40...I'd probably get my ass kicked in about 2 seconds if I showed up at that venue now!  And my co-workers had no interest in punk music anyway so we decided to go the completely opposite route that night...

Just across from the fairgrounds is a popular local hangout...The Branding Iron.  Yes folks...its a country bar/dance hall.  Now I have to admit to having a real disdain for most country music, especially the newer stuff (which is about all they play at these country clubs now). But most contry bars I've ever been to have 2 good things going for them.  One, the drinks are usually pretty reasonable.  I don't know why this is but its always been true at the country bars I've attended in comparison to other night clubs.  And two, country bars are completely full of seriuosly hot chicks! I'm a maried man...but I'm not fucking dead!!  And if I'm gonna hang out, drink beer, and admire the hot women then I have to admit that there is no better place then a country bar!  Seriously guys, if you can stomach the goofy rednecks and crappy music you will find no better place to meet hot chicks!

So that evening, around 9pm, we head toward the country bar.  As we are just nearing the place there are suddenly about a half a dozen cop cars, sirens blaring, that came flying by us headed towards the fairgrounds.  As we arrived on the scene there are punkers all over the streets.  A few newspaper stands were overturned in the street and papers spread around, but thats about it.  We drive by the scene, turn into the country bar, park, and go in.

Now one of the funniest thing about contry bars is the goofy rednecks all doing thier line-dances.  If you've never witnessed this phenomenon then I'm telling you that it is reason enough to go to a contry bar just once.  I'm not sure who ever told these people that they look cool, but they seem to be having fun.  And all the hot chicks get out there and dance also.  Its kinda like they are just lining up so you can get a good look at them.  Both a funny and strangely entertaining spectacle to behold.  Needless to say we took seats right next to the dance floor and started drinking heavily.

About one hour after we arrived the DJ suddenly breaks into the music and makes an announcement..."Hey folks, there seems to be some issues going on with the concert across the street so there will be no in-and-out privledges tonight.  If you leave, you're out".  Of course I see about 5 or 6 big rednecks head for the door to see whats going on (far be it from a redneck to miss out on a good fight). But the bouncer stopped them and talked them into staying inside.  They went back and resumed their sheep-like line dancing.

Then, about 15 minutes later that the music stops and the DJ gets everyones attention...."Folks, I have an announcement...we are on lockdown!  Do not attempt to leave, the building!  The doors have been sealed, even the outdoor smoking area is closed.  Feel free to keep drinking and dancing.  If someone has an emergency we can arrange a police escort to remove you from the property."

 Holy shit! Whats going on out there?!

Then a waitress walks by looking all distraught. She says "Shit!  I was just out in the smoking area and got tear-gassed!"  At this point I can't help it anymore and I just start laughing.  Here I am on lock down in some shit-kicking joint while a full on riot is ragin outside between the punks and the cops!  I tell the watery-eyed waitress to get me another beer and shot and I contemplate learning one of these goofy line dances just to get closer to the hot chicks.

Well, about another 2 hours passes and they are letting people leave now.  We decide we've had enough and head to the door. As we exit the bouncer says  "OK guys, heres what you have to do.  When you leave the parking lot you have to turn right, put on your 4-way flashers, and drive 5 mph.  The cops will direct you where to go from there."  So like good boys we comply.

As we start down the street I am shocked at what I see.  The immediate area around the fairgrounds looks like a war zone.  Bussinesses are vandalized up and down the street and some are nearly destroyed.  The streets are covered in glass, furniture, trash, and anything else the punks could find to throw around or vandalize.  And there are a shitload of riot police everywhere.  They direct us where to go to get out of the area (once out there was no way back in).  As we leave the area and start into the surrounding neigborhoods there are scattered groups of punks all over the place hiding in dark corners and backstreets.  It was pretty funny seeing them all cower around and try to figure out what to do next.

We went back to the hotel and called it a night.  The next day everything was mostly cleaned up/boarded up.  But it was certainly an entertaining night in San Bernardino!

Crazy! I wonder what provoked it? They probably felt the stupidity leaking out of the line dancing bar and went temporarily insane.:smirk:

Punks are cool with me, unless they try and put off that I'm-more-punk-than-you attitude. Then, I just ignore them like the rest of the morons. I grew up listening to a ton of punk music and I still listen to a ton, so technically, I could be confused for a punk, by a person that didn't know me better.

lol...awesome post man.

I've worked in a couple of country bars and you describe them perfectly....Dorky dudes in jeans that are so tight that their nuts create a camel toe effect, line dancing with eachother, and the women...ohhhh...the women...

I was kind of hoping that the story was going to evolve into a big hillbilly vs punk brawl...meh...maybe next time.

hahah thats great. I've always enjoyed a good riot, and punks and anarchist are always looking for a reason to break stuff and get in conflicts with the police. I just wish I had been there!

although it is kinda funny how none of them realize that there will never be another show put on like that one now.. oh the liability. punks are fun, but not smart.

Its too bad I didn't have my camera while I was there Saturday night. We went back Sunday morning and most everything was cleaned up/boarded up. This was what was left of the Jack In The Box drive-thru sign (thats my friend in the pic).
