back from india!

just got back, around 19:30 est this evening.
too tired from travelling, etc to write much, but here are some pictures until i'm more alert tomorrow or the next day.
the front gate at my grandparents' place in bangalore where we stayed most of the time
all the houses in the area have rooftops, many with beautiful gardens. i sat up here to smoke cigarettes and read short stories in the early morning sun.
my great-grandfather used to own this whole block of property, right across from the ramakrishna mission. it was mostly sold in the 50's, but my father's cousin still has a flat on the other side of the block.
my dad, outside the ramakrishna mission.
the city of mysore, from the top of chamundi hill
the temple at the top of the hill (unfortunately it wasn't open because of mahashivaratri, however there is an even older shiva temple behind it, that was open and having a shivaratri pooja while we were there)
some of the monkeys who live by the temples

the maharaja of mysore's palace
we stayed one night on the kabini river, next to nagarhole national park. me resting after the bumpy drive.
and some safari pictures

then back to banagalore
Cubbon Park (bangalore is filled with beautiful parks, it's known as "the garden city")
the parliment of karnataka
the outside of a large ganesha temple
the bull temple next to it
a lot of temples in karnataka are made entirely of carved stone
ok that's it for now. time for some food, and then sleep.
i'll post some more pictures and more detailed accounts later this week

Damn! Those are some really nice pictures. Despite all the mixed messages everyone gives me about India, I think I'd like to visit someday. The architecture in those photos is simply incredible.
Did you get to celebrate in the Shiva festival with the weed smoking?

Indian looks like a very nice country. Which parts did you visit?
I especially like the 6th picture!

I think it would be fun as hell to go over there!! That would be pretty cool just to be walking aroudn the forest and find an elephant.
Also was wondering if you took part in the Shiva festival.

haha, no actually holi is in like 2 weeks so i missed it.
while i was offered ganja various times by people on the streets, i didn't really trust any of them enough to try it out. all the younger people i hung out with either don't smoke, or don't smoke regularly at all. so, while i saw a few people smoking chillums at various temples, i had a 2 week hiatus (which was, in all truth, sorely needed). however, one of the first things i did when i got home was pack up a nice one to ease my mind. and, now that i think about it, one more before bed should do the trick!

most of my father's family in india is middle to upper-middle class. bangalore as of late has had a huge tech boom, so my cousins/uncles/relatives around my age have all benefited greatly because of that. and, in the indian tradition of extended families, their parents/grandparents/etc have all as well.
one strange thing about bangalore is there will be a few very nice posh houses, and then corrugated iron shacks next to them - then maybe a construction site with people living in tents, a few more big houses, and more shacks. unlike pretty much everywhere else i've been, where poverty and riches are very segregated, in bangalore they mix in the streets (mostly due to a lack of space)

Those pictures are beautiful!! I love the buildings there, I've always wanted to visit India. Suffer went to Bhutan, which is close to there, but a LOT smaller. I love the picture of that temple with the intricate carvings.

I gotta ask, how was the food there? One of my favorite places to eat in the city is this small Indian restaurant with traditional cuisine (they have a couple tandoori ovens that were shipped from India and the owner took me back into the kitchen to make some naan, damn those ovens get hot!). Looks like a great trip, I'd love to visit India one day.

the food was excellent. i was in south india (karnataka) the whole time, and most south indian people are pretty adament about eating only south-indian food (99% chance you've only had north indian food, there are very few south indian restaurants outside of india) - but i also went out to many great restaurants serving north-indian, goan, kashmiri, and even indian-chinese (a very strange but great cuisine, tastes nothing like chinese in the states)
plus everybody i know there is vegetarian, so it makes it easy for me

Not to be a smart ass, but did you see any cobras there? I am scared shitless of snakes and seeing a cobra would make me shit bricks like Fort Knox!
My friend is from India and he said one night while back home visiting he saw a cobra while walking through tall grass.

i didn't see any cobras, although some other snakes and a lot of mongoose (mongeese? ) that eat them.
my dad told me a story of waking up once with a cobra inside his mosquito net. it was chased into a bag by their next-door neighbor (after he slid out of his bed), and then my grandfather took it to a friend in the herpetology deptartment of some local university, where it was fed to a boa!
