colonizing

I just inoculated my 1/2 pints, and i am now poking around on the site. Im seeing some shit on not to cover the needle hole and alot of saying to cover them. How important is the gas exchange during the colonization period? I want them to colonize as fast as possible, but i definetly dont want no contaminates. so..... Tape or no tape?
I dont have an incubator or any of that suffisticated shit, i got them on a shelf in my room with the heat cranked up. They are exposed to the open air in my room.

As long as you have the layer of dry verm you don't need anything covering the holes. With the tape off colonization is 2-4 days faster.

I'd roccomend Tyvek. This is the material used to insolate houses. It can easily be found at your local post office in the form of a large envolope. Plus, IT'S FREE, if you get it from the post office.
Tyvek allows gases to pass through, without letting larger particles pass. Just cut out a square and put it on top of your lid!
Good luck!

Tyvek,
Thats a great idea argo, is that to substitute for the usual coffee filters used over the jars?

To apply it would you just suggest like a rubberband to hold it down?

Actually, if you are using the glass canning jars, put it on top of the lid and then screw down the other part. You could definately use a rubber band if you wanted, but the other method would secure the Tyvek somewhat better.

The method of putting the Tyvek between the lid (the circular metal piece with the holes in) and the rim thing(the piece that screws on to the jar and secures the lid). I'll see if I can find a pic.

Here is a pic. Although it looks like this person did something wrong with their jar, it's all nasty.

Oh I see, ok, I was figuring you'd place the tyvek under the lid, that is defintely a better way than my 'fancy rubber-band' tricks :-D
Thanks.
