spore life and inoculating agar
    #537077 - 01/31/02 05:19 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

okay heres the deal, i bought some spores from THE exactly one year ago, without having a place to grow at(woops) ironically enough a year later i have a place. i was wondering if these spores are still good.

also, i know they must be very dry, and i plan on using agar which has also been sitting in my fridge for a year. can i use the method of simply streaking the dry spores on to the agar? i'm aware it would take longer to get going, but all i can find is incilin syringes. so i cant make a syringe. so is this method possible, the book i have is somewhat vague on this topic.

please let me know if you know something on these topics. i wanna get going as fast as possible! hehehe the irony....

my pet hamster has a similar situation, but the spores were only 3-4 months old. the agar PDA solution was made about a month ago, and inncoluated about 2 days after the PDA was made.. still, out of 5 jars, only one is showing any signs of mycellium growth. dont know if he screwed up though, because the agar solution isnt totally solid. pint jars were used instead of petri dishes. give it a try, it may work, but may take 3-4 weeks for the suckers to start reproducing like they should.. after it takes hold should work fine... good luck
