Anyone know What I can use to raise PH?
    #5369043 - 03/05/06 11:02 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

My peat moss reads 4-5 PH. What can I use to raise the PH? I have looked everywhere but hydrated lime or calcium chloride are hard to find. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what store I can find it in and a product name. EX Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Rona etc...

Thanks

Im sure Home Depot, Lowes and those types of stores have hydrated lime

or you can order a calcium carbonate substitute from one of the vendors

You can also use ashes. Wood ashes work well, but they generally take as much as twice what it takes for hydrated lime to raise the pH. If you can order online, it will be really easy to locate all of the things that you may need, otherwise go to Home Depot. They have hydrated lime in the garden dept.

Is oyster shell enough on its own?

oyster shell is a long term buffer..

hydrated lime works very quickly.. so its best to use a mix of both, however some disagree and think hydrated lime shouldn't be used as it isn't used in professional mycology

Search for a farm supply in your phone directory. You want the high calcium lime, they will carry several kinds.

What about using the "pH up" solutions they sell in hydroponic stores?

I Just picked up some calcium chloride to boost ph anyone know how much I should use for 1 cup of peatmoss? Pickeling lime is pure calcium chloride btw helped me find it, you can find it right next to the mason jars in stores.

Pickling lime is hydrated lime. It's my favorite, and many commercial grow operations DO use it. Use one teaspoon of hydrated lime, and one tablespoon of gypsum per cup of peat, and mix into the dry peat. Mix the dry ingredients very well, then slowly bring to field moisture level and pasteurize. If you can't find hydrated lime, you can get it online at www.doitbest.com When you get to their website, do a search for hydrated lime.
