Cooker Drama
    #5368602 - 03/05/06 08:50 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

OK so my pet Sasquatch Sassy was cooking come 50/50+ in her P.C. not to long ago. When she went to get her Filter Patch bag out the P.C. she noticed the bag was all wrinkly and semi melted. The jar that was on top to hold the bag down was leaning on the side of the P.C. (amazing it didn't explode.)and there was hardly ANY WATER in the bottom of the P.C.. She thinks she might have put to little water in the bottom when it started (although she put the same amount normally used for jars.)the manual says to gently steam the P.C. before you put the psi regulator on and shes worried she might have steamed it too strong before placing it on. She ran her P.C. for a good 50 Min's at 15psi and about 20-30Min's in she smelt the smell of burning plastic. The bottom was not burnt, just the whole bag was kind of wrinkled. IS THE MIX STILL WORTH USING?? OR SHOULD SHE JUST TOSS IT? A terrible newb mistake and she knows she is lucky her P.C. didn't run to long with no water or things could have gotten dangerous.

Well, a PC with no water has no pressure so I wouldn't think it'd be dangerous, just a big mess if it had went further. As for your question, there's no way for us to say without a pic, but you can tell better yourself. You say 50/50, that's a casing right? If it looks dry, just add some sterile water, no biggie.

Actually, I was just thinking about this, and it occured to me that if you smelled plastic at 20-30 minutes, and it was empty of water, the bag may not have gotten sterilized. I thought I should mention this since I said responded by saying "just add sterile water, no biggie".

Edit: I just reread and saw there was water in the PC after cooking. Plastic smell was from the bag touching near the top I guess. So it probably is sterile  lol, sorry.

This one has been really bugging me. Here's my current theory. The PC did go dry at the 20-30 minute mark. This explains the wrinkled bag. It did not burn because the water inside prevented it, in the same way a paper cup of water will survive in a camp fire until the water boils off. Once the burner was turned off, the bag continued to release moisture. Some of it condensed on the inside of the pressure cooker and ran down the sides. This explains the tiny ammount of water at the bottom when it was opened. No way to tell if the bag was properly sterilized. If it is casing mix you're "probably" fine, but that would be bad advice. It certaintly wouldn't hurt to rehydrate and PC it again.

Of course it's been a day since your post, you may have already decided what to do. Sorry for any confusion I may have created.

Thx for your opinion Rahz, its much appreciated. Sassys going to use the mix and pray to the lord of fungi everything will be OK, maybe burning some of the holy ganja will please the gods and help them look over her casing.:stoned: I would also like to mention that the recipe for 50/50+ was cut in half. So wouldn't the time in the cooker also be cut in half?? Sassys not sure, so if someone wants to put this theory through the ringer of criticism please do so. :tongue2:

no you can't cut teh time in half beucase you still need to sterilize it... sure size matters a bit haha, but thats only beucase if you have a huge bag the center won't heat up as fast. that center has to stay the full high temp for whatever time you are using. however PCs heat things up efficiently so size won't matter much. also you are sterilizing casing mix not substrate. some people don't even sterilize it at all or just do a quicky in the microwave.
