Intresting observation on sclerotia growth
    #5368600 - 03/05/06 08:48 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

My first batch of sclerotia is approaching harvest, and I've noticed something worth mentioning. This was a rye grass grow in quart jars. I decided to vary the ammount of grass/water (keeping the ratio the same) in some of the jars. Some of them had 300ml rye grass, some had 350, some had 400, and I pushed one to near the top with 425.

The jars with the most substrate are not the jars with the most truffels. In fact, it looks like my best yield will come from the jars that had 300ml rye seed. And, the jar with 425, and several of the 400s have produced little to no growth.

I'm sure there's a good explanation, either sub temp, or gas exchange, just thought I would mention it.

Interesting.......I am starting on my first grow. Though I am using bags. I asked around for some advise and this would be easier to quote

Quote:

try adding bits of plastic, hard plastic discs for the sclerotia to grow up against. Otherwise I would layer many bags out with the substrate flattened out to give it a large surface area. THe sclerotia seems to only grow on the jar/bag face. I have heard many talk about adding extra things in the bags to give them more "faces" to grow up against.

From a shroomer

Maybe the jar with less has something in common with that.

Im sure the jars with more would catch up if given a few extra weeks, they probably just took longer to colonize that amount of grain.

Well, they're more than a few weeks behind. Weak would be the word. It was LC from multispore, so there may be a random factor involved, but it seems almost like the jars that colonized quickly still had the energy to begin a good truffle set. And it seems like the fuller jars act like how unshaken grain jars can, stall after a period of good growth.

haha, I was at the store a while back, and on the counter were these 4 inch cigars in little glass tubes with cork stoppers for 70 cents. So I bought 4 and kept them until about 2 weeks ago when I did my latest batch. After filling the jars 2/3 with substrate, I shoved a tube (minus cigar and cork) down into the center, one each on 4 jars. I did 8 total, so I can do a total yield comparison... 3.5 months from now.

Adding the test tubes didn't seem to affect the yield much if at all, if that's what you're asking about. I never got around to doing little bits of plastic, but it's a good theory.

As far as the original topic, I would suggest going with the lower quantities of rye seed, as my tests indicated that the yields were better than the more filled jars. My theory is that the quicker colonization makes for a better sclerotia set. As a bonus, when the jar is only half full, the sclerotia tend to grow above the seed so they can be picked out and need little if any cleaning.

My guess is that growing against a solid surface, like glass or a rock in the dirt, would represent a way to conserve moisture.

If you try the marble experiment, I would be curious to see the results.

is it worth growing stones in spawn bags then, or ya better of with spliting it into 4-5 jars?

Was just wondering this today, nice findings Rahz.

I'm not sure but suspect the sclerotia to seed ratio is better in quart jars. Even if yields were better in jars, bags would be less effort to do large volume.

Still, if I were to grow truffles again, I would do it in jars, and pick out the 'floaters'. They're much prettier when they don't need cleaning, and the cleaning job isn't much fun. I was scrubbing truffles with a toothbrush.

If you check my journal, there's an entry on truffles. It describes the substrate and method I recommend.
