CLEAN WORK
#5368509 - 03/05/06 08:07 PM (17 years, 10 months ago) |

Clean clothes & work-place, along with good sanitary procedures.
AND
Hair covering (net/cap), face mask, exam gloves & Lysol/Oust.
ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS.
These are common-place inexpensive items, found at most local drug/pharmacy stores.
Using these will cut down on contamination.
I am amazed, why many don't use them. Then wonder why their jars/bags, syringes, prints or whatever get contaminated.

3 Cheers Agar.
Simple steps can go a long way, I haven't even begun my first grow yet as I am still working on a clean set up and procedure plan worthy of a good grow log. I will be picking up materials to construct a glove box, as well as clean clothes, hair nets, gloves, and sprays this week, as well as finishing up my martha and replacing any integral parts on the pc I bought.
Sterile work environments in a hobby as contaminant vulnerable as ours is paramount.

I think a lot of beginners (I know I did!) have trouble recognizing the difference between sterility and cleanliness. And when each one is needed. People need to realize When working with PC'ed (sterilized) substrates sterility is EVERYTHING. Absolutely nothing but the mushroom's spores can be added to the jars.
WHICH MEANS, When you take your spores on a journey from cap to print to syringe to jar you better make sure no meanies hitch a ride with ya.
A glove box and isopropanol alcohol go along way IMO.
However, Sometimes you can go overboard. Like working with pasteurized substrates and fully colonized substrates. This is when only cleanliness is required. I think a lot of people out there are unnecessarily choking themselfs and spending money on cans of Lysol and the like.

Growers must realize that WE are the biggest source of contamination.
I'll add to the above not to talk or sing, etc., while inoculating jars or doing other clean work. Your breath leaving your mouth is traveling faster even than a flow hood can blow it back. It's also perhaps the largest source of bacteria in our jars. The bests surgical masks will stop 99% of the bacteria leaving your mouth, but think about that 1% of several billion that gets through. That's a lot of bacteria even with a good medical, not dust mask. I hold my breath anytime a jar or petri dish is open. Gloves are mandatory for consistent success. A box of them is less than the price of a single spore syringe. They'll save a lot of failures. RR

AGREED!
And the funny thing is....its not that hard to be sterile! A spray spray there, a wipe wipe here, and you're off to the land of oz.

I have been quite lazy and infact have done my inoculations in some of the poorist of sterility and yet I have a high success rate so far. But better safe than sorry in my book.

I dont do to much with petris. For a standard inoculation in a quart jar you just need to be fast. I dont use a glove box or air cleaning crap and i get about 1 of 30 jars conataminate.

Incubating casings in a clean environment and not opening to check them is one major thing I just recently learned the hard way. I introduced the green meanie to 4 of the 6 casings I have been incubating. Total devistation... I'm hoping the other two stay strong and dont get contammed but I dont have much hope. I know for sure that next time I case I will NOT open to check until atLEAST a full week. As well as store them in an sanitized, opaque tub (not incubator, and not just covered with foil and a blanket over.) Like I said, I learned the hard way but some times that's what it takes. Learn from other's mistakes if you haven't already learned from yours though.. thats the best way to go. I wish I didn't blow off basic steps such as spraying lysol before checking on casings, using gloves to spawn the poo, next time I'm even spawning in my glove box.. I refuse to have another contamination outbreak... Most of the work I have done up to this point is now outside in the dumpster. Back to the Jar waiting game...

Use clear lids or saran wrap and you can check on them without introducing mold spores.
But you are right i think fucking with it too much is the worst noob mistake.

Gah.. I wish I were naturally a clean freak. But I'm not. I'm a total slob. I haven't taken the trash or recyclables out of my dormroom in at least a month and a half. My car is such a wreck that there's litterally trash/junk piled up passed the seats in the back. I buy plastic silverware because I never wash regular ones, and I've got empty food packets, pudding containers, and fruit refuse just lying on various surfaces in my room.. it's bad.
So all the cleanliness required for this hobby is not easy for me. And I've had my fair share of contams from cutting corners or just being generally unsterile. But I think I'm progressing.. lol. Hopefully this hobby will be my turning point and will lead me to start living in a cleaner environment. Because frankly, my filthiness sickens me.
