a friend fan dried for 36 hours then placed in a damp rid tub. come back to checkm on it a couple days later and the mushrooms are damp and a few have possible rot spots.. probably a rot-type smell on a few, but not others. Some are just damp and do not have any signs of rot; is it worth trying to save any of these? thanks for any help.

well, is the 'rot' blue, or black?
and what does it smell like, if you can describe it.
that may be bruising if it is blue.
if it is black or dark brown and does not smell like the average cube, then i would not attempt to save it and throw them away.. its not worth the risk IMO

a few turned brown/black on the tips and seem to beginning to smell that sickly sweet smell... those aren't what i'm worried about.. they're getting tossed. the ones i'm worried about are the other shrooms that were exposed to these. they themselves don't have any signs of rot on them, but they were in a sealed chamber with the rotting ones.

This is WHY I strongly suggest investing in a dehydrator.

recommendation noted, he just doesn't have bottomless pockets.
the thing that worries him is the fact that the other seemingly clean units were re-damp (after a fan drying) when discovered...

I understand BUDGET restraints.
At the same time, after all the time, trouble & investment of growing - a crop.
It is a shame, to have it ROT, right before your eyes.

how about it guys? should he bother trying to save these seemingly ok units?
what about drying them out completely and seeing how they smell/look?

I would.
Just dry them fully, use the oven drying tek if need be.
If I was in your shoes and I was that worried about it I would make tea with those shrooms. The near boiling water would help put my mind at ease.

He doesn't want to do anything stupid, he doesn't want anyone who accidentally might consume these to get sick. But really how much of a risk is there?

On closer inspection, more of them possibly had the beginning signs of rot.. there might not be enough worth saving after all. This is quite possibly one of the most disheartening things that can happen... at the finish line, being shot down. Makes him want to give up, maybe he should. Thanks for the prompt replies, hopefully someone will benefit from this hard learned lesson.

Dont give up man.. I know how it is. I just got hit on 4 out of 6 casings with trich and had to throw them out.. Ive also had a few mushies go to mush from neglect.. shit happens, its part of the hobby.. just keep on colonizing substrate so you have an endless supply - and it wont really matter if a casing or two messes up cause you can just make a new one.. i have more jars colonizing right now then i know what to do with

I agree with myco, anything hard is worth doing. sure it would feel nice just to inoculate, pop up the next day and eat them, but honestly I enjoy the feeling of watching them grow. It might sound kind of noobish, especially from a person who's spent a few posts complaining about a cake taking to long, heh, but every failure is a learning experience.
