Substrate Overlay?
    #5367495 - 03/05/06 01:57 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I checked back up on the substrate I had incubating in my Double Tub and decided that I'm going to prep and sterilize my casing mix today and then case tomorrow. I noticed that there is a little room in between the substrate/myc and the wall of the tub. Is overlay only a concern with casing? Should I case a certain way now, maybe putting some down the sides or something? I only have to push the tub in a little until it touches the myc, but I'm sure its enough that I could get casing down the sides if I wanted to.

It's pretty common for your substrate to shrink once it gets colonized. After reading a post agar made I have started lining the insides of my tubs with tin foil. It will sorta bond to the mycelium and get pulled in with it.

If you don't have anything blocking the light from getting down the sides of the tub you will end up with a lot of side pinning. You can fill the sides in with DRY vermiculite. This will stop the side pinning because there will no longer be a humid micro climate between the mycelium and the tub.

Once the substrate is fully colonized, It's time to case.

It's almost fully colonized. It should be by tomorrow, so I'm going to start sterilizing my casing mix today. If there's enough room, I'll put vermiculite down the sides, if not, I'll just case normally.
