Hello all, I have been reading this site for a couple of months now, I went to wall-mart last night and purchased,
4 Bags of wild bird seed 2 bags of perlite 2 bags of jiffy mix 1 Submersible heater 1 Air pump 1 Bottle Of Alcohol 91% 1 Bottle of Peroxide 1 Strainer 1 Box of Latex Gloves 1 Bag of Polyester Filling
The Tek's I?m going to use: Double Tub Tek and Tub In Tub Tek Preparing WBS
Now my question, I was going to go for the straw, but I read that if it doesn't start growing with in 2 weeks it catch?s contams real easy, So I guess my question is, If I use perlite as the bottom layer, How many 1 Liter mason jars should I use? Do I add a 1/2 inch layer of perlite and crumble the cake on top it and add another level of perlite? Much help would be appreciated.

You do seem a little confused.
When doing WBS or other grains, no cake is actually created. Especially when using shouldered jars.
The air pump and perlite wont be needed with a double tub. Simply fill the bottom of the tub with your substrate and spawn your grain to it(like wronguy does in the tek). You can use just the wbs in the tub. I don't recomend it. Best thing you can do is get horse poo. If not then look into something like coir or straw. I haven't used or heard great things about straw however. and the casing layer will provide the necessary humidity. The polyfill stuffed holes allow for air exchange. A fan can be pointed at the tub to help with air exchange. It doesn't need to run for long. Don't let it dry the tub out.
Click the link in my signature and read through those teks. Some you might already know, but I guarantee you will find A LOT of useful info there.

Do you have a PC ?
Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony Hippie Chick
I?m going to order a PC off the net when I get around to getting a money order for my spores. So after the jars are 100% Mycelium I just prepare the coir and then mix it 50/50 with mycelium? Sorry for these question's I?m sure you have heard them a thousand and one times but I just don't want to buy all this shit and then send it down the drain I?m sure anyone could understand that, and nice greenhouse hippie chick, After (If) I get success with the double tub tek I plan on going to Kmart and buying one of those closet sets they got similar to yours.

okay I have a new change in plan, I plan on using WBS like before and I am going to use aluminum baking tray's to put my vermiculite, mycelium and jiffy mix in, Now my question is, can I use the double tub tek for this? I plan on putting some perlite on the bottom of the tub for humidification but I read in a perlite humidification tek "Make sure that your terrarium doesn't have any hole to drain CO2 . Fanning the terrarium with the top every couple of days is fine." I know the hole's in the bottom of the tub is to drain the co2, would the double tub tek still work for this procedure?

When you use individual casing trays and start adding extra sources or humidification, you've really just missed the point of the double tub. The double tub is a tek specified for bulk grows to get good yields with minimal interferance.
My advice - check craigslist or your phonebook for some stables and just get some horse poo. They'll give it away for free. And use that to make a double tub, following the tek to the letter. Do not improvise, do not innovate, do not stray away from the tek at all, until you have done enough to actually be able to comprehensibly do something beneficial.
If you really don't want to do bulk substrate, then just put a 2 inch layer of saturated perlite on the bottom of your tub and fan it 3-6 times daily (don't mess with polyfilled holes), then go ahead and make the WBS casings like you had in mind.

Well I was thinking of doing bulk, but I don?t want to get to ahead of myself, I?ve been reading all these teks for awhile and now I?m just not sure what to do, but you have set me in the right direction, I guess I?m just going to do the 2 inch?s of perlite and fan it a couple times a day, what should I use to case it with? I bought jiffy mix cause I read in a tek it was good, anyone recommend anything else for a beginner that I can pick up at a garden store or walmart, lowes?
