Help wiring a computer fan
    #536681 - 01/31/02 07:48 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

So, I want to build my glove box this weekend, and I want to use a computer fan. Can anyone point me to a good website that explains how to wires a computer fan?

Thanks,
tullycraft

This site is huge... and there's no search box as far as I can see. What part of it is relevant to wiring a muffun fan?

Actually, the part about buying an old power supply occured to me while I was surfing. There are 120v fans that you can buy, but I can get a nice cheap power supply from around here anyway, and computer fans are cheap.

yeah, power supply would be your best bet, never and i repeat never just hook up a fan or anything strait to your wall receptacle that isn't intended for it. You could always just hook it up to a 9v battery though it won't go as fast, two of those volt batteries, that you could pick up at walmart or just about anywhere, hooked up in series would do nicely though.

Stay the fuck away from rat shack. Do us all a favor.

You could also use a latern battery or even a car battery. I think theres a way you can wire 2 12v lantern batteries up to spit out 12v for 2x as long as a single batt. (Is that serial or parellel?)

also you could just scrap-negro any old computer off the street, yank out the p/s, and use that.

If you use a 12 vold DC computer fan, just get an AT computer power supply. MAKE SURE that it's an AT, and not an ATX or something else that's soft-switched. You can tell an AT supply from others because it will have two long connectors for the motherboard, as opposed to one fat connector in ATX power supplies. An AT power supply will also have a switch attatched to a big black wire (the switch would normally be at the front of the computer) and will not have a switch on the back of it. Anyway, you should be able to figure it out.

So what you do with the fan is connect the black wire from the fan to one of the black wires coming from the power supply, and connect the red wire from the fan to a YELLOW wire coming from the power supply. Done.

If you need any extra help, send me a pm.

They make 120V AC computer fans. You can get them at radio shack (shiver). Buy a power cable and a few wire nuts. Hook one fan wire to one side of the power cable with a wire nut. Hook the other fan wire to the other side of the power cable with a wire nut. The order of the wires doesn't matter in this case (its AC not DC). Create an S shape with the wire nuts in the middle of the S, the plug going out the top and the fan going out the bottom of the S, and wrap them with electrical tape. Done. Total cost aprox 15-25 US depending on the fan you choose.

someone without electrical experience shouldn't be messing around with an output of 120v, not a bad idea though.
