Children's nursery rhymes and songs and movies and fables and fairy tales very often contain really important meanings, that most don't ever understand. Take Beauty and the Beast for instance: Beauty symbolizes the side of your personality that you like and think is right and nice, and the Beast symbolizes the other side of your personality (the Jungian shadow) that you don't like and try to separate from. And only by embracing and loving the Beast can one transform it into what it's been all along: a thing of beauty.

Disney was remarkable. Anyways, back on topic, "life is but a dream" would mean that our experience of life is something separate from some higher, ultimate Reality.

This is an interesting statement, because on the one hand, so long as we continue to try to describe and create abstractions for the reality around us with our ego, we will think ourselves separate (when in fact we are as much a part of our environment as a tree, for example.) But then the question of if there is some even higher Reality raises its head. And according to the great spiritual masters of the world, there is: the Godhead/Tao/Brahman/the nonduality. But also according to them, we aren't separate from It, so there isn't anything higher. It's almost paradoxical.

When I was in about 3rd or 4th grade, I really seriously contemplated the idea that "life was but a dream." I had this idea that when we die, we wake up from it, possibly into another dream. Looking back on it, it's no wonder I grew up to be a psychonaut.

Have you ever watched Waking Life?

Oh man you really should. That idea is practically a direct quote from the movie. They discuss different ideas of the nature of reality in an easy to digest manner.

It's amazing!

Yeah an I saw it and it totally blew my mind. And the theory the movie imposes makes sense. As well as reincarnation and as well as many other theories. Maybe what happens after death is not the same thing for everybody. Or maybe after "waking up" as dead is just another faze.
Anyway the movie is excellent. I loved it and every time I see it, I just keep understanding more and more. I think it's one of those movies that just does that to you... regenerates and creates new thoughts and insights.

Don't hesitate another moment!

I've been singing this song to go to bed and induce lucid dreams.

It works... of course all methods work, but this one seems significant.

It really does seem like this song is sort of a message for all of us children to realize where we came from.

I mean think about it you have little kids singing about life being a dream.... the kids just emerged from whatever flow of consciousness lead them, as if in dream, to their human bodies.

The goal is to gain unity once again with that stream and row gently down it, living a peaceful merry life with no major ego boundaries.

....I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human......
Om Namah Shivaya, I tell you What!

I'm with you, but to me it suggests that life is a dream in the sense that it is blissfull and dreamy, as long as you choose for it to be. It could equally say, "life is but a game." This song reminds me that life is not meant to be taken too seriously, and that we should enjoy every little second as if we were rowing a boat along. Its not about the boats destination it is about the rowing, the moving, and taking pleasure in it.

No, the movie suggests more than that. And I'm not quite into that ::life is a dream/game/joke....etc". Life is what you want it to be, and if you want it to be a joke or a dream, then it will become.
The movies, besides the dream-like situation, lucid dreaming, dreaming as being dead, etc, has TONES of other ideas, just listen to what every character is saying, pay attention to their gestures, the movie is complex.
Foe me, the main idea of this movie was freedom and the need for evolution.

I wasn't talking about "Waking Life," I was talking about the nursery rhyme.

And yes life is what you want it to be, so if you want it be a simple nursery rhyme children's game afternoon in a row boat humming and giggling and such than it can be that, and what better way to conjure that reality than with a simple song for children?

That's my take on the song.
