Dryed out cakes
    #5365925 - 03/04/06 10:13 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

A foaf has an issue with her BRF invitro cakes. She used a 40 watt lightbulb in a box for incubation, and leaves it on almost 24/7. There is a lot of mycelium growth on every part of the cakes except for the sides of the cakes that are facing the lightbulb. What happened was that side of each cake dryed out.

So my foaf was wondering what to do about this? Is there a way to rehydrate that part of the cake? Keep in mind that my foaf has fairly limited resources. Also, she would like to know if letting the cakes grow will still have a decent yield, even though a small part of the cakes are dryed out?

Thanks.

If it's dried out it won't colonize. You can birth the cake and remove the uncolonized portion with a sterilized knife.

A TiT incubator is your best best. You can also just let jars colonize at room temp.

Take a syringe with sterile water and inject a little bit into the cake. If the cake is already 100% colonized, but dry, dunk it overnight in some distilled water to rehydrate it.

Thanks for the info. My foaf was curious still if it would be OK to just leave the cakes with the dry portions until the first harvest? Could this cause any potential problems?
