Victor Wooten

Last night I saw probably one of the best fucking shows I have ever seen. It was Victor Wooten at the Filmore in San Francisco. I saw him before at the same place about a year ago on his Soul Circus tour, but there was no comparison between then and now. I was completely blown away by the performance. There was so much god damn energy coming out of his bass and his fingers were flying faster than the eye could catch. But all that is pretty normal for vic. The thing that really made this show stand out was the fact that he had two very well known guest artists.
One of them was Felix Pastorius (son of the legendary Jaco Pastorius) and the other was Stu Hamm who has literally taken the art of solo bass to new limits.
First Stu Hamm came out and performed probably the amazing feat I have ever seen a musician do. Everyone knows about when he played the Peanuts theme on his bass, because that's one of the many songs that has brought him to fame today. But that song seemed like a nursery rhyme when compared to what he did last night. Somehow he was able to play every single note of the famous bluegrass tune, Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Earl Scruggs, on his bass. All the notes the banjo plays, the bass plays, and the chords too. Not only that, but he played at a tempo that is even faster than the Earl Scrugg's original (which is already pretty go damn fast). It was completely mind blowing.
Next Felix Pastorius played a jazz tune. Bass lines, guitar chords and all on his bass. I didn't recognize which tune it was, but nonetheless it was simply amazing. He is really up to par with his father.
Next was the highlight of the night. All three of them, Victor Wooten, Felix Pastorius, and Stu Ham, came out played a song together. Trading off solos, playiong harmonized solos, and just totally jamming away. It was fucking insane!
Another interesting thing that happend that night was when we were all smoking weed at the start of the show. My brother was standing right next to me. I had already smoked a bowl with him a moment earlier and now we were working on a joint. He took one hit of the joint and passed it to me. As I took a puff and passed it to the left, all the sudden my brother started to lose his balance and toppled over. He fell into the person in front of him and it first I was laughing my ass of because I thought he just lost balance,b ut he fell all the way on to the floor and did not get up.
It took me at least a second realize that he was unconcious. There was a sudden shock from the surrounding crowd as the gathered around him trying to revitalize him to no avail. After about 30 seconds he regained some conciousness and was able to stand up with help from his friends. By that time a security guard had barged into the crowd to see what all the commotion was about. I thought he was there to arrest my brother for smoking pot at the show because the first thing he asked was, "Were you smoking something." My brother nodded and the guard helped out of the crowd to the side of the auditorium. From that point on, because I was still in the center of the crowd I lost sight of my brother, but I later foudn out that he wasn't in trouble. The security guard was only trying to help. All he did was bring him to the cafe on the upper level of the Filmore so my brother would have a place to sit.
The reason, I believe, that my brother fainted was due to interaction between his anti-depressant (Zoloft) and the marijuana. I also think that dehydration had something to do with it as well. I may be wrong about this, but I used to be on anti-depressants my self and even though the one I used to take wasn't an MAOI it still definitely had major reaction with marijuana and other simple drugs.

I found this video on google where Stu Hamm plays Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the same song I saw him play last night. It appears about half-way through video:

I think there is no comparison between the two. In actual musicianship I think Wooten has the upper hand. In overall originality and creativeness I think Les Claypool would win. But in overall talent and ability to make good music they are equals and that's really what matters.
I was going to go to a Les Claypool jsut a month ago. I even bought tickets for it, but my friends flaked out at last second (typical of them) and I had no other way to get to the show. I was pissed off that I missed it, but even more pissed off that I wasted my money on a ticket that I wouldn't be able to use.

That sucks. I agree, though. Both are quality musicians with very different styles. They should hook up!:)

Lucky bastard! I wish I could have seen that show. I've never heard Felix play before though, can you recommend anything good?
And on another note, I've experienced what happened to your brother. I think it was a combo of dehydration and not eating all day (smoked late in the night and blacked out/fell over). Weird feeling that was.
