coffee/rye mex A complete failure

Four weeks ago I tried the dilute coffee/rye grain method for growing Mex A, hydrating the rye grain in a 50% dilution of the coffee I drink. I have seen zero growth of any kind in those jars. What a waste of expensive spores and time. sigh.
Are other folks besides Roger having good luck with the coffee/rye grain method? A mexi-cube I started at the same time on the same mix is only 25% colonized. Temp was 73 degrees. I have had o.k. results, though slow starting, with the same mex spores on wbs +quinoa +bone meal. The only other spores I started on the rye berries (without coffee) were azures. They were slow to start but grew like crazy once they got going, so I'm pretty sure the rye berries are o.k.

Some coffee grounds in a substrate - works. Other than that, I think the coffee soak thing is pfffhhht.

Thanks Agar. I won't be using coffee again. In my grows that is... Tsin

You might want to look into your moisture content, gas exchange or other factors. I've been using coffee on EVERY single grow for several years now, and I'll never go back to plain water hydrated rye. Coffee will not prevent spores from germinating, or the cup of coffee you left on the counter two days ago wouldn't have mold on the surface.
My quart jars of Mexicana, once the rye berries are removed, show on average 1/2 quart of sclerotia. Good luck on finding the problem. RR

Roger,
I was not knocking the coffee thing.
I tried it once & it made little or no difference. But, that could have been just a 1 time variable.
Hey, if it works well for you & others, go for it.

My wheat atlantis (no coffee) produced very little sclerotia at all. RGS had nice bigguns

Thanks for your attention, Mr. Rabbit. Reading your posts was what got me so excited and confident that I did a whole batch without a no-coffee control. How sensitive do you think the concentration of coffee is? I drink it pretty strong. Maybe I should have diluted it by 1:4? I've found mex A slow germinating on wbs. Like two to three weeks. I'll re-inoculate the rye/coffee jars with a cube LC and see if that grows.
Blackout, I had a pretty good (48 gms/partial quart) yield on wbs+corn cob+quinoa+bone meal after about 60 days. The remaining jars are at about 4 months now.
Anybody else using the 50% coffee hydration?

The 50% figure I give is for 'normal' strength coffee, so if you drink it starbucks strong, I'd cut it in half again, but that still isn't what prevented germination, even if you had used pure, very strong coffee. Did you remember a bit of lime to balance the ph? Personally, I think even without ph balance and coffee too strong, you'd have gotten growth, just not optimal. I'd check your spores and or grain tek. Open the jars and see if they stink. Also, make sure you didn't get feed rye, as that could have fungicides on it which would definitely stop germination. RR
