What went wrong?
    #5364106 - 03/04/06 10:14 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Sorry for the complete noobicity of this post, but we all gotta start somewhere, right? I've just failed my first attempt at growing cubensis, tried to follow the PF tek but there were several things I did that were far from perfect. I'd just like some input as to what was the killer blow, and whether some of the other stuff doesn't matter too much.

Day 1: Inoculated two cakes with spores as per the PF tek at http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23593. Used the ?max fruiting formula? of ? cup of brown rice flour, ? cup vermiculite, 60ml water, all measured out pretty carefully. Poss. sources of error:
? Was only able to find coarse vermiculite, not fine as the tek suggests.
? Used 250ml (roughly ? pint) tupperware tubs instead of canning jars, they were the right shape (circular, tapered sides) but could only have a tight lid
? Used tap water ? tek suggests mineral water or natural pond water is better.

Day 10 (ish): 1st signs of germination. This is later than I expected, but it's been fairly cold, probably 50s to 60s Farenheit (10 ? 15 C), the heating in our flat's not up to much.

Next couple of weeks: The mycelium spread through the tubs making a nice fluffy white coating just as it should. However at one point we had a very cold spell for several days, the flat was probably in the 40s F. I can't be sure, but I think I didn't see any growth after this ? could this kind of cold kill mycelium? I moved the tubs nearer our one working heater, although not so near it would overheat them, but it didn't seem to help.

After 4 or 5 weeks with no ?pins? showing, I probably should've given up. Nonetheless I did try transferring them to a terrarium, spraying them twice a day using a clingfilm spray shield. The terrarium is intended for animals so is full of airholes which I've simply covered with clingfilm. The cakes were away from the heater again at this point, but the temperature was back up to the 50s-60s. Didn't see any change in the cakes at all over this period. Is clingfilm good enough for a spray shield, and keeping things humid, or should I invest in a better terrarium?

After 7-8 weeks mould started appearing, and I finally gave up.

So 2 questions:
? My instinct is the cold killed my shrooms while they were still in their tubs, is that likely? Is there anything else I did which is drastically wrong?
? If I scraped off the mould, could I still get a psychedelic tea out of the mycelium?

All help is much appreciated!

Happy shrooming

I doubt your failure came from the substrate preperation. My first PF jars were made using the same stuff you used. I used tap water too. My jars are kicking along just fine. I did use a PC though.

I think the failure came during the fruiting stage. I wish you had some pictures to examine.

Those WERE some cold ass temps, but not enough to kill myc. The casing in the thread I just made was exposed not only to temps around the 30's, but also reached 110f!I would say the cold temps stalled your myc long enough to get contammed, or you just wasnt clean enough when making your sub.
