A Casing Question
    #5362882 - 03/03/06 08:30 PM (18 years, 30 days ago)

ok im sitting here getting shit ready to PC up some more jars and it dawns on me...

What if i fill a 6x6 tupperware container with substrate and innoc that and instead of "shocking"(breaking it apart and waiting for it to recover is what i mea prolly not the right term) the myclelium just let it clonate in this tupperware container and adding a casing layer on top of it once its fully clonized.  Will this work, Has this been done before, or is it just another stupid newb question?? any help appreciated

Kind of confused me but sounds like a stupid newb question. Just PC your jars, inoculate and let them colonize. THEN case them.

ok what im sayin is instead of clonizing jars just innoc a tupperware container filled with verm\BRF and wait till fully colonized then u would have a casing all ready to go right? just trying to clarify my idea wich im thinking more and more its a stupid one

yea

No, do what I said its the way people do it because its the best way. And when you inoculate shit you have to be completely sterile, innoc a casing the way you want to would result in a gross fucking mess. Just follow a jar tek and then a casing tek and keep in optimal conditions and you'll have a lot of mushrooms.

go for it man, I had the same idea. Y couldnt you sterilize a giant dish of your mix, pcing it, or if its a big tray sterilizing it in the over, and then inoculating it. its the same as with jars just bigger.
let it colonize and when its ready to fruit, put it in a fruiting chamber. the casing tek, is the way it is to get a bigger slush basicly. Id say go for it....

im sure if you pcd this verm/brf mixture in your tupaware and let it colonize then after full colonization scraped your top dry layer of verm off and put it in the fruiting chamber you could possibly get fruits....never tried it but it sounds logical to me

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

You can do pretty much the same thing with rye/grains. Hell, it can probably even be done with BRF cakes.

Instead of breaking your stuff up, leave the cakes whole, and place them in the casing container.

Maybe I'm just a big dummy dumb dumb, but I don't see where he said he was using pint jars for his BRF cakes.

Sparknutz, are you using pint jars for your BRF cakes?

Read again . He is wanting to use something 6"x6" . That would be bigger then a pint jar . I was pointing out that pint jars are too big for BRF , hence , what he wants to use should be even slower to colonize . Kinda like saying pint jars are too big to work , but 1/2 gallon jars should work fine, lol.

Well, making a 6"x6" BRF cake was part of his original question, but I think his main point was making a ready-to-case cake. I mean, he wanted to colonize something (tupperware) so that instead of breaking it up and allowing it to recover, he could just case it and fruit it.

But making a 6"x6" BRF cake just won't work out very well, and you have mentioned that.

I guess what I misunderstood was which post you were talking about. I thought you were talking about me suggesting putting the cakes whole in a casing container. But actually, you were replying to his answer regarding which substrate.

So nevermind.

I am a big dummy dumb dumb.=[

But the link to the casing tek that I supplied would work with 1/2 pint BRF cakes. I believe. =]

It should work just fine you would just need a few more inoculation points is all. When I started doing PFTek back in the day I would use heavy duty ziplocs (gal.) and would (in a glove box) dump three sterilized BRF jars into it and one colonized jar mix (knead) throughly form and flatten then let these colonize. These are called flat cakes and created larger surface areas thus larger yields. Worked great, just something for you to think about if ya get bored. GL
