pressure cooker ran out of water
    #5361565 - 03/03/06 01:25 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So I was Pc'n 5 1/2 pint jars and the PC ran out of water. I did not know it ran out of water for maybe 15-20 minutes and the jars came out extra brown (like it was semi cooked). Question to you guys is, has the substrate been stripped of its proper water content and fried the brf because of this; and I am assuming if so, they are bad? Thanks.

its hard to say becase i cant see tham but i would say most likely.
how did you running out of water ?
i have a huge cooker it will hold 14 quart jars and it may only loose 1 cup of water in an 1.5 hrs. FYI after the cooker is up to presser dont leave it on high spewing out ,to it down as low and you can and still stay at 15 psi, when my cooker is running the steam comeing out looks like a tire does when it has a small flat and you spay water over the hole , just a slow dribble

Definitely bad, as is your pressure cooker. Do not attempt to bring that thing to pressure again after running it dry. You will be operating a bomb. When you get a new PC, follow bones's advice above on reducing heat after pressure is reached.

Water level should be at least up to the rack, also letting the weight excessively giggle will also allow PC's to run dry prematurely on those models. The heat should be set so the weight only giggle 4 times a minute on the ones with the three psi weights. GL

I think the problem was in that the jars i used were too tall and making the PC top not be able to seal with the rest of the pot. Thats how it ran out of water, just kept releasing steam and boiling the water down.

If it was never sealed correctly, you never reached pressure anyhow. Your PC just may be trashed. You could test it on a hot plate outside if you are brave. I personally would do it, but recommend caution if you try.

If your jars were too tall they would have cracked as they expanded from the heat and cookers are not built that way bro they should have tabs the pressure pushes out any way my friend the gaskets Are designed to seal with this outward pressure, in other words look somewhere else. Was the steam escaping from all around the gasket or out the top?

P.S. I have run a PC dry without any consequences but thats just because it ran out of water towards the very end I believe. Theres no way to really tell if your ius damaged unless it's magnifluxed and that would be more trouble than it's worth.

You can buy small kits to magnaflux metals. It's a binary spray composition. You can get them for about 20 dollars. The work reasonably well. You can find them at many auto parts stores and industrial supply houses.

It was having a hard time reaching pressure, so I just pushed down the lid a bit (it only has this problem when i stack 2 1/2 pint wide mouth jars on top of each other, but not when I put in 2 1 pints). It then got to pressure, i turned it down to low and let it go for an hour, and the last 15 mins or so was dry. I think it was just boiling too long before i put pressure on the lid.

I have used it since then and it worked fine, so I dunno.
