I keep hearing that casing is a good thing to do, but I can figure out what it is. Can someone explain it to me? Can someone give me a link to find out how to to it?
Thanks

casing is essentially breaking up your cake and putting it with material that it can grow on. This gives your mycelium more surface area, and more surface area means more mushrooms.
A good example is simple vermiculite casing, in which you get a container, (you can even use a pie pan) and place your broken up cakes in the container, lining the bottom, and simply cover with vermiculite. This is a simple technique, and there are other casing teks which are more advanced, but even this simple one is more effective than cakes.
of course this is just a general explanation, you should search and learn as much as possible.

Here`s a good link with pics too http://www.shroomery.org/9er/casing.html I`d try just straight damp verm for your first try at casings. Wet and squeeze the verm till just a few drops trickle out from it. This is about the right wetness. Then place cakes in whole or crumble into marble size pieces and then cover with damp verm. I prefer crumbling because the mycelia re-colonizes much faster I believe. Don`t forget to put a layer of verm on the bottom also. Cover with foil to keep in the dark for few days. Peek in at it and when you see that the mycelia is poking through about 25% of the vermiculite..take off the foil and drop your temperatures to about 75 degrees to initiate fruiting. The damp verm simply re-hydrates the cakes and the size of container adds surface area.....hence.. more shrooms, usually larger size too Another thing nice about straight verm casings is tha t you don`t have to sterilize the verm.Once you succeed at casings you`ll probably never go back to just birthing cakes
