i have some pf cakes that will be fully colonized in about a week and i have been thinking of what i am going to do when i case them.
should i break the cakes up or leave them whole inside the casing, are there any advantages to either method?
if i was to break up cakes how thick a substrate is recomended?
my original plan (12 cakes, 6 casings) was to break them up , not very small, and spread 2 cakes evenly over a 1/2 inch verm in a 3" by 8" meatloaf tin.then 1/2 verm on top.
muhhahahaa

everyone is going to tell you to break them up & make a casing.
advantage: bigger yields
recommended substrate thickness: 4 inches
cant go wrong with cakes though, always fun to watch.. just depends on what kind of yield you are looking for

I'm not a cake guy. So, take my advice with a grain of salt.
If you can find the right sized tray. I would suggest setting however many whole cakes tightly in it. Then, break up a couple more, mix in an equal volume of pasteurized coir, fill in the gaps between the whole cakes & lay the remainder on as a topping over everything.
Then, let that colonize to 100%, add a 50/50 casing cover mixture, incubate a few more days, then expose the tray to 12/12 off/on light cycles & FAE. In other words fruit it out, like a bulk tray.

break up into pea, or marble sized pieces.
anything works really.
ive never left them whole though, so i dont know how that works out.
