Final Preparations
    #5360040 - 03/02/06 11:29 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So I've read and read and read. I've talked to several people who have done this or that - got several ideas bopping around in my head. This is my main plan of action:
Start with 12 half pint jars -
4 containing standardized PF cakes
4 containing a 50/50 BRF/Kamut mixture
4 containing Kamut

I got the idea of using Kamut while standing in the natural foods store waiting for BRF to fall off the shelf and into my arms. I read about it on the label, and it is the "Great-Great Grandfather of Grains", a high-energy grain which adds flavor and great nutrition to any recipe. Well, nutrition is what I am looking for, not filler, hence we don't use bleached flour. I'll let everyone know how these cakes run.

I do not have my syringes yet, so I am at a dilemma, as my cooker is borrowed and must be returned. The preparation of the lids - holes or no holes? I plan on letting these cakes sit for a bit (might as well make sure I'm not wasting my spores and give anything else it's chance), and don't know about how long holes with tape will hold out the meanies. Beans lasted on our shelves for a year, tomatoes too, why not flour and vermiculite? But with a hole in the lid? What is the shelf life? Should I just plan on stabbing them with a hot nail at a later date? It may be awhile before the syringes arrive.

Also - I have a product called Mushroom Compost I located at my local Lowe's store. I want to use this in a casing layer when the mycelium is all grown up, along with coco bricks and more vermiculite. This compost product I am unsure of it's composition, although a Google search brings back some hits for mushroom compost and it's use in other forms of gourmet mushrooms. I plan on 3 casing setups, as I would like one for each of the 3 types of jar I am doing.

One last comment - using a more nutritious water. I read about a dog-food mix. What about a simple manure runoff solution? Throw it in a bucket with some holes, use the black water that comes out. Would this not be more fruitful?

Thanks for any ideas, experiences, or help you may have to offer.
