Yea, just hit up the store. I found mine at Lowes. I haven't used it yet but I picked up a bag that had perlite in it. I've read in post that this isn't that bad of a thing. I plan on doing a 60/40 mix with some verm. Anyone else done this?

Apparently there are different types of JiffyMix. Some has Perlite, some has Vermiculite.

Some knowledgable board member just clued us all in this afternoon.

Yeah, it makes a big difference. I fucked up and used the stuff w/ perlite and I'm payin for it now. The perlite has already sucked a lot of moisture out of my casing and its only been 24hrs.

the perlite did not "suck it out", right? it just made shit airy enough to evaporate quickly? i think you will be fine if you just keep it watered.

i use scotts metro mix 360C. They have a ton of different mixes. i get the 360 with coir. it is peat, coir, fine verm, bark ash, wetting agent, and ph balance. it has too much coir, but not enough verm. so i add chunky verm. more water retention to the mix, makes it more airy and loose, and brings the end coir percentage down a lot. its like 30 or 40% out of the bag. i don't like using that much coir.

its basically like jiffymix, only a little different. oh, and im pretty sure you can use jet dry as a wetting agent.

Hey jamman, did you mix your Jiffy with any verm or just cased straight up?

I messed up and did it without verm, but I wish i would've noticed before I used it. I'm probably just gonna try and find a new batch with verm in it or switch to peat and verm. The perlite is a bitch

I've used both that contain either the perlite or vermiculite. There's not much of a difference in the 2 really. Both are Peat Moss based. If the casing layer's drying up on you, it's not the products fault.

I've always used the stuff with perlite and haven't had a problem. Casings lose moisture fairly quickly anyway, that's why you mist and fan daily.

There isn't a big difference as far as the peat goes, but the verm will provide water retention where as the perlite will provide an airy soil and no water retention, right...?

Perlite retains water, yet not as well as vermiculite. So, all in all a vermiculite mix would be better on paper. But, not much of a difference on substrates...

By the way. I'm not saying to replace vermiculite with perlite if needed in your own casing mixture. Vermiculite indeed is superior to perlite, but not a big deal when locating and using Jiffy Mix...

Right and wrong at the same time. Perlite has been proven to hold 2-4 times it's dry weight per volume. Terrible water retaining strength, yet still holds water.

This is why the material is good to use for humidification along with it's porus texture.

Right, but what hotnutz and I are getting at is that the jiffy mix with the perlite in it will work just FINE.

What is the difference on the look of the bag for the perlite and the vermlite? Or does it say on the bag somewere?
