Yellow in Manure?
    #5358625 - 03/02/06 06:12 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I found these guys in a relatively fresh pile of horse manure, in very green grass. The weather has been fair, around 65-70 degrees, with high humidity and occasional showers. I have no idea what they may be. The larger cap is about 1.3 inches across, while the smaller is maybe 4/5 of an inch. They bruise yellow, and I have yet to obtain a spore print. Didn't notice an odor...

The seemed to be growing beneath the manure, but it was difficult to tell short of destroying the entire mycelial network. From what I've seen, it doesn't look too much like pluteus, especially since the caps are somewhat veiny...

Yeah I highly doubt Pluteus, which typically are found on wood and develop salmon colored gills in age - I'm not aware of any that grow on manure or that are yellow for that matter. not that I'm an expert on the genus by any means...

All I can really say is try and get a spore print.
i can't really dig out all of my books and go through the keys right now.. they are put away till spring
Besides with most keys to genera, they usually start out with spore print color.
Just going by what info was able to stick in my head.

Given a yellow, slimy, striate cap and growth from dung, a likely candidate is Bolbitius vitellinus. If so, it should produce a rusty brown to rusty orange spore print.

Happy mushrooming!
