Brownish ring around mycelium
    #5357867 - 03/02/06 02:55 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hey, Have a set of pf jars that are incubating right now, and I noticed a brown ring around the developing mycelium that is in all of the jars. I am using a water heater style incubator and I really hope that this isn't a mycelium dying. I am trying to keep the temp around 85F.

Post a pic man its really easy.

Other than that I had really brown rusty colored spots on some of my jars and they were fine. If you drilled holes really small pieces of metal will rust. Thats what happened to me because I forgot to rinse the jars out before I packed the substrate.

But yeah you can just scrape it off once the jars full colonized or just cut the chunks off then case.

Its definitely not rust, its more of a halo or ring around everyone of my mycelium growth. I didn't have it on my last batch, but the last batch wasn't kept up at these temperatures.

Did you pressure cook the jars or use a pot?

Hey, I'm new to this and I have come across this exact ring, but only in one of my 18 Jars. I used the BRF tek and did not use a pressure cooker but a large pot boiling for 90 minutes. I only noticed the ring after the jar was nearly fully colonized. This is my fastest colonizing jar too. I've checked it regularly and haven't noticed any changes. None of the other jars are getting them after they reached full colonization. The ring or halo seemed to form around one of the inoculation points.
Did you have any success with your halo ring jars?
Did you ever find out what it was or caused from?
Thanks!

first off 85 F is too hot, drop it down to like 75 F.

Secondly, show us a (good) picture.

It could be rust, although rust is rather reddish. Really need to see some pictures from both of you.

Today I noticed there are a few dark brown patches in the mycelium above the light brown halo. I take it this jar is toast?
Any idea how this would have happened?
There is still no signs of any other contamination in my other 17 jars.
Furthermore, the newly contaminated jar colonized with at least twice the speed of all the other jars. Any ideas why?
Thanks for all your help!
Best website ever

There are multiple vectors of contamination.

Look them up via the search engine.

Good luck, and I hope at least a few jars made it through for you!!
