It must be noted that this 'hydro' experiment is the shittyest I've ever seen!!! I should never have posted it. Check the other links i posted here though. They're better.

one last question, would it be a bad thing to leave a towel or something underneat the pots to soak up the excess water? I dont have any potting trays available to me right now and i dont want to get water everywhere and start an electrical fire lol.

Would be a great thing as any roots that come out of the bottom of the pot from drying up

Dr J says... even with soil, small plants should be watered every day and larger plants 2 - 4 times a week. In coco &/or clay pebbles 3 times a day is acceptable and may even make them grow faster. This is the advantage of using an inert medium that drains well.

wait, i should be watering my seedlings every day?  Why is there so much conflicting advice on this shit.  Water when the pot is dry, water when the leaves wilt, water every day.... Well, wtf is it then? hehehe  It's starting to drive me a little nuts, ive been watering every 3-4 days since that seems to be when the soil has dried out completely top to bottom.

what i can say about watering is that overwatering is dont overdo it , overwatering is one of the most common mistakes first timers do, just water it whenever you feel like the soil is dry (but it doesnt have to be dry from top to bottom)

but see you statement in itself is confusing.

break it down and look at it.

1.)overwatering is one of the most common mistakes first timers do

and then you say

2.)just water it whenever you feel like the soil is dry (but it doesnt have to be dry from top to bottom)

Am i missing something?

BTW small update:

Talked to buddy who was visiting with friend of ours.  He told me in about 2 weeks time we'll be able to pick up some clones.  So now, even if this grow fails, we'll have a solid backup coming up.  The clones should be a little bit easier to deal with and i know ill have all females in the end.  Next big step is to design and build a cabinet

thanks for all the help guys!

well i can see how that was confusing, but there is no standard answer, it all depends on several factors,, like if u have a fan blowing over it, it dries faster, if you have low temps in the room it dries out faster, if you use small pots it dries faster, lots of drainage it dries faster, my advice is dont water it 2 times a day just becaue someone says you should, what suited them might not be ideal for you. you need to just find the way that suits your setup the best, but dont let it stand with wet feets, you will fefently notice if you dont water it enoug, the plant shouldnt look death hanging down before you water it, its more difficult to tell when you are overdoing it. so i say water it when it feels right for you. but if you stick your finger in the soil and its wet yuu dont need to water you should wait. if not water it.

I would water every day to begin with (especially with clones) but once they're going well, give them 2 day in a row a week with no water, this encourages them to spead their roots to find water. Larger plants 2-4 times a week is fine. I personally like to water a little often. But then, I use coco and clay pebbles, so I have the advantage of it being almost impossible to over water. Root rot is a terrible thing, so get to know your plants, and what they can take. You can gradually increase strength of you nutrients towards the end of the bloom phase for better results. Also use a water only solution once a week to 'flush' the soil. Remember that if you do switch to coco you can water much more, but not less than 3 times a week.

Well the clones coming to me are going to be rooted in organic soil. Im not going to be able to break away from that until i start my next seeds. But i will be trying a hydro bucket or two.

Small update:

2 more ladies died today, or at least they look like they died. Im going to water them and see if i cant bring em back but i think they're pretty much gone.

Ah well, clones are abound and i have some new seeds to work with.

Cool. Hope all goes well. It sucks haveing plants of all different ages though. Makes it hard to get the lights at the right height. This happened to me on my first hydro grow. Top some of the older ones or bend them if you have room. There's an article on bending and pruning in the last, or second to last softsecrets mag of 2005. Did you read any of the mags btw?
Anyway, gtg.

Nah, ive been pretty busy lately havent had much time to do any reading.  I understand the difficulties associcated with having plants at different ages, but, at this point i just want something thats going to produce

Yea, man. The simplest solution to your probs would be to put the small ones right under the light and other one around them. Also taking the tops of the taller one will make them grow wider and lower. This is all fairly obvious i suppose. Topping your plants might add a few days to your grow time but won't lose you any weed. Also i know your probably dying to smoke them. But fear not!! You can start harvesting early. (5/6 weeks into flowering) If you harvest the tops of the plants first more light will get down to the lower buds and they'll end up bigger than they would of been. If your planning on regenerating the plants don't cut of more than 2/3 of each stem and leave the bud on the remaining bit. Once the plant has started to regenerate properly (2 weeks after changing the light cycle) you can pick these last remaining bits of bud off (carefully so as not to damage the new growth). I regenerated my to favorite plants from last time and they're HUGE!!!
As far as bending is concerned; if you bend the top of the plant 90-180o then it produces hormones in the plant that make the side shoots grow more, you don't need to snap the plant, but if you do, and its not snapped right off it'll still grow. Use elastic bands and/or fishing line/weights to do this. (I'm sure you can think of something.
The end result of this will be that your new plants will get more light and give you more bud. (It'll slow you old plants by a few days though due to stress, but as I said you can harvest early). Next time, choose your favorite plant or two (best smoke/biggest yield/fastest/strongest) and regenerate it and take loads of cuttings (cuttings taken from the bottom of the plant will root better, the plants also regenerate from the bottom up). Alternatively, just regenerate the whole lot. Now you have a larger room.
On a final note...you are making sure that no light interrupts their night cycle aren't you?
If not this can slow or stop the flowering process. (at least until week 6 or so after then they just keep going even with a few interruptions). Hydro buckets are great for cuttings. There's a good article on this that I'll go find you to save you time, (after all I'm a full time horticulturist now so I have a bit of free time!! hehehe)

From what I saw your plants arn't on the brink of death, they may not be the healthiest. As they grow you will be surprised to see how much your plants can handle.

When I was like 15 and living at my parents house I planted 3 plants about a mile away from my house. Only went to check on them 1-2 times a month. Surprisingly enough 2 plants turned out to be femals and had some decent smoke.

Ahh.. ok. Didn't realise they we're still babys!! Ok. Just get those new seed and cutting asap. And don't use peat this time!! Cuttings and seeds hate it!! How are the plants today? Did they recover a bit? Stoner guy is right, they can take alot of abuse.

Im not using peat, they're in 6 inch peat pots. The seedlings were originally sprouted in those little square looking pots that are about 2 inches tall. They were transplated to the 6 inch peat pots (the little pots were just planted in the peat pot and filled in with dirt).

The seedlings didnt really recover, they're all looking shitty and im not seeing any growth. Ive pretty much chalked this grow up as a failure and im looking towards working with the clones when we get them.

It could have been shock from the transplant. Try starting out in a bigger container so your plants can get bigger befor you transplant.
