Finally! (update, New pics small harvest :) )
    #5357861 - 03/02/06 02:53 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Well ive been wanting to grow herb for as long as ive been smoking it.  A buddy of mine and i have been talking about getting a small grow going since august.  A big issue for us was finding a reputable, retail, hydro shop close by.  Until yesterday the nearest shop was 3 hrs away and even then we couldnt find a tele number or address.

But yesterday, thank god, we found a hydro shop not even 5 min from our houses.  So we booked on over there and picked up a 430 W HPS light with hortilux bulb and tube reflector.  The guys at the shop were awesome and gave us a lot of great advice (its nice to not have to pretend about what you're using the light for) and we walked out of there with a great setup at a discounted price.

We had purchased some purple urkel and Matanuska Thunderfuck from a reputable source.  Previous attempts to germinate the Urkel seeds failed miserably due to my friend being extremely careless.  To ensure the grow's future we shipped off 12 of the thunderfuck seeds to an experienced grower we mutally know and had him germinate and propagate the seeds into 1 inch seedlings.

So thats where we're at, 2-3 weeks in (dont know when he germ'd the seeds), 1 inch tall seedlings sitting under a 75 watt fluro (soon to be 150 once i get another tube), and a lot of high hopes and inpatience.

Here's some pics of where im at so far.

So there ya have it.  Im pretty excited about this, it's very unfortunate for me that OG is now history and i wont have access to that awesome database.  Hopefuly my cannabis guides and advice from other growers will be enough to get me through the first harvest without too many problems.

Oh yah, for one inch tall plants they sure do smell a bunch.  It's not noticable with the door closed but as soon as you open it, it's unmistakable.  Signs of good things to come?  I hope so

This spring I'm going jonny Appleseed style with several hundred seeds gathered over the long cold winter months.
We'll see what kind of success rate i get in Autumn.

Edit: Reply intended for coda.

You need to get some more light on them soon, or they will start stretching out. If I were growing in that closet, I would use a four-foot double-bulb fluorescent shop-light for your veg phase. They are available at Lowe's for around $12. Be sure to get one with a plug.  Use two different tubes: one cool white and the other warm white; this will give you a balanced spectrum. Make sure the tubes are 40 watts and look for the ones with the highest lumen output. Those purple grow tubes have a balanced spectrum, but they are inferior to the setup I just mentioned because they have a much lower lumen output. You also want to have the tops of the plants almost touching the lights, like less than an inch away from them. Four-foot tubes don't get especially hot, so don't worry if they touch the plants. If the plants are different heights, you can stack something under the short ones to raise them up.

If they smell strong now, just imagine how they will smell once they start flowering.

A few years ago I grew some plants in a closet with an exhaust fan that ventilated into the attic. The fan took care of the smell at first, but as they started flowering, I could smell them in my room with the closet door closed. A few weeks into flowering, I could smell them in the hall with my room door closed and the closet closed, even with the fan on high pulling air up into the attic. They never did finish, because it wasn't long before I could smell them outside the house, so I got paranoid and cut them down.

That was some amazing weed though! It produced an intense body buzz with visual hallucinations. If anybody has ever smoked immature sticky bud dried in the microwave, you know what I'm talking about.

Good luck with your grow coda. It looks like you are off to a good start.

MTF doesn't exist in seed form, but I don't doubt that will be some killer Sativa.

uh, in no way is what im growing a sativa.  Take a look at the leaves, broad and fan shaped, you can tell already that its an indica dominant strain.  Ive seen MTF offered through several seed banks as well, i dont know where you got that info from, but its wrong (especially when you do a simple google search and it comes up in several seedbanks).  It was sold to us as alaskan thunderfuck, but to me its the same thing, we didnt buy these seeds from some random dude either.  These came from someone who knows what they're doing, i definitely trust what he says to be real.

Shroomy Dan- Hmmm, so the fluro i have is no good huh?  Damn looks like im off to lowes tonight then since ill be out of town for a marijuana conference this weekend (i get to meet ed rosenthal  ).  Before my friend and i left with the seedlings yesterday we talked with our guy to make sure our setup would mimic his.  He only had 150 watts of fluoro, its funny because i actually thought we did buy a high lumen fluro but i just checked the box and boy are you fucking right.  It's so low i might as well have a candle as a light source .  Thanks for that tip, ill head out tonight for some new fluoro's.

Im not to worried about the smell just yet, the hydro shop nearby has awesome carbon filters.  The grow tube we purchased for the HPS light is also setup to receive the blower and filter, we didnt buy one because it was deemed unneccesary at the time and an expense we couldnt cover ATM.  Looks like in a month or two imma have to setup an exhaust system, i might even move the grow to the back of the house since the windows to the right over look the parking lot (and managers office  ).

Dreamer- Actually, we're looking to do the same thing!  We live in the middle of nowhere so we want to grab a GPS device and go get lost in the middle of the woods.  Once we find a suitable spot we want to cover the area with seeds and save the position on the GPS.  We're hoping we can get remote enough that no hiker would find it, but nearby enough that we can check on it without having to take a vacation to do so.  It's really a pipe dream right now but it definitely could happen.  My buddies ex roomate is living at a place which would be perfect, only problem is we'd have to split the harvest amongst one other person and its a 3-4 hr drive to get there.  Not really convienent to say the least

Thanks for the well wishes guys, compared to mushies these guys grow slow as hell, but hopefully ill have some nice updates in a few weeks for y'all.  Right now its time for the bong and then off to lowes!!

Yeah, Alaskan Thunderfuck is a supposed hybrid of the original, but yeah, still contains those potential genetics of a plant that grew bud with the THC content of some hash.

thanks guys!

Mecreate- Im sure you'll be getting a taste of it man, hopefully we'll have some in time for the may schwagstock

Kaptkid- Oh, i know, these guys are gowing fast!  Notable difference, it may be a little stretching, but a few of the plants are noticably taller then yesterday.

A little update:  I went out to lowes and bought the 48 inch shoplight like dan suggested.  Took me a little bit to get the employee to understand what i needed, but i managed to get a ballast and three bulbs for 19 bucks flat.  The thing was a semi pain in the ass to put together because it came with no instructions, but after fiddling with it for a few minutes  i had it assembled and working.  The difference in light is amazing, this ballast also seems to focus the light directly downward which is something the other one didnt do.  I have it rigged with ropes and the small length of chains they provided, it'll have to do until i get back and get some proper chain measured and cut as i didnt have the equipment neccessary to install the lights right tonight.

One question i have is how much to water the seedlings.  I havent been able to find a definitive answer in my grow bible, and several people have given me conflicting advice.  I know that less is definitely more when it comes to watering and feeding, and my friend watered them right before i left, but im not sure when is the next time i should water them.  Suggestions?

are you talkin about a reflector? because thats not the purpose of a ballast.

I've used a 400w sodium on seedlings with no ill effects whatsoever. As long as it is kept higher than it would be for adult plants and their water levels are monitored due to the increased heat and small pots, I would definitely use that instead of some fluoros.

As far as watering goes, for pots of that size I typically wait until the top inch or so is looking/feeling pretty dry. How quickly this occurs will depend on RH and temperature of your closet. In my experience, I've found it better to water less as compared to more. Drying of the soil promotes healthy root systems afterall. In the turf industry, we tend to recommend infrequent deep waterings. It makes for tough grass with lots of roots. Although not necessarily a good thing, the plant WILL tell you if it's severely thirsty, the leaves will become limp and rubbery (loss of turgor pressure) but you can typically give it water before the leaves actually dry out and the thing croaks. Try to get a sense of how much a completely dry pot of soil weighs and make sure it never gets too close to that weight. This method has worked well for me through the years, although through my upbringing these kinds of things have become something of a 6th sense.

I think you would be surprised to see how vigilant a plant can be for short time periods with regard to low water content.

I dont want to use the HPS because several people have reccomended using the setup i have now for a little while before switching to the HPS.  I need to gain another inch and have them a little more robust before i start fucking with the HPS.

Thanks for the advice about the watering, i know that you shouldnt really be watering these guys more then once a week, but the soil felt pretty damn dry.  Ill most likely give it a mist or two from my misty mate just in case.  I wont saturate the soil just wet it down and let it be.  I wont be home for 3 days so i want to make sure they dont go too dry whule im gone.

Is it may already?

You will be better off saturating the soil and then allowing it to dry out. Light watering will only wet the top levels of soil and promote shallow root depth.

I wouldn't worry too much about over-watering. These plants like lots of water. I once saw a wild hemp plant growing from submerged mud at the side of a stream, and Hydro setups keep the roots perpetually wet. Allowing them to dry out between waterings will make for sturdier plants, but you should thoroughly saturate the soil each time you water.

I would avoid misting; It promotes mold growth.

So, saturate them enough to have water come out from the bottom?

Yep, it should run out the bottom, that way you know you have thoroughly saturated the soil.
