PC got opened!
    #5357722 - 03/02/06 02:21 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I just started to PC my jars and about 5 min into the process my girlfriend opened the cooker. :mad2:  WIll that affect anything?  I just closed it right away and continured on but I am unsure if that will compromise the outcome of a good crop.  Any thoughts?

Shouldn't be a problem.

Just make sure your GF is very aware that if she had waited a few more minutes, she could have been badly burned. dang.

True.
Also, when you finish your pc cooking. Wait till the pot cools to open.
Sometimes, it will be under enough pressure that your jars will crack when you open while under pressure. Also, if you open before the jars are cool, they will suck in outside are as they cool off and you may get contams.
And be very careful with pc. It is basically a bomb!

If it was up to pressure, it should NEVER open, they usually have saftey devices. Teach your GF to be more careful.
If it was up to pressure, you could have boiled off some extra moisture from your grain. Other than that you should be fine.

Wasn't up to pressure yet. And yes it has a little lock safety thing on it.  Thanks for setting my mind at ease.  I thought this was going to be another batch out the window.

baced on what you said i think i should point out that you dont start counting down the hr cook time till the cooker is at 15 psi

and also when you start the cooker let it vent till it has been boiling for a about 1 min this will clear out the air in to cooker so that only steam is in side i dont remember exacly how but 15 psi of steam is 150F not 15 psi of air it will be a few degrees cooler it is my knowlage that autoclaves do this too

i believe at 15 psi you attain much higher then 150 degree's.

Had this cooker been up to any decent amount of pressure she wouldnt have been able to open it. I have to wait until my PC depressurizes completely before i can open the lid to remove the jars.

15 psi= 252 degrees F .

And as Coda said , once under preesure , she wouldn't have been able to get it open .

It wasn't up to pressure yet or like you guys said, she wouldn't have been able to open it. And I don 't know, I guess she was just curious, I am just glad she didn't hurt herself. And thanks for the extra info, this site has been great to me over the last few years.
