You need some sort of filter because regardless of method of inoculation, the jars still need gas exchange.

No, for what stage are you asking about anyways? You can use polyfill on grain jars.

No. But you do need some kind of filter on your lid for gas exchange. Polyfil works great. I guess you could use micropore tape too.

im still a newbie but i was thinking to use brand new quart jars with no holes drilled in the lid for the G2g transfer ..Holydiver this is b4 i put the jars in the PC...but do u think i should drill the holes and use polyfill and tyvek instead or no tyvek and just polyfill or will i be ok with not drilling the holes

You could get away with not drilling a hole and having a filter if you leave the jar lids loose while in the incubator. I've heard of that method being used with success, but you'd probably be better off and safer just making the filter holes.

I'm a bit confused, but I'll tell you what I do:
Take plastic or metal jar lid, drill a single 1/4" hole square in the center, and stuff moderately tight with polyfill. Load jars with WBS, cover with alum foil, and pressure cook. You can inoculate directly through the foil in open air once cooled, just be sure to use alcohol at inoculation sites and on the needle.
Remove foil, cover with a coffee filter (or two) held in place with a rubberband, and incubate. Make up more jars the same way. When you want to do a G2G, I suggest building a still air glove box. Use a sterile spoon to transfer material from the colonized jars to new jars of WBS. Make sense?

You can spray a bit of lysol, then do the transfers after the dust settles. IME, more important is to put a bottle of rubbing alcohol in there too, and make sure your gloves get wiped off first.

Lysol contaminating jars?
I just bought my first roll of micro-pore 3M paper tape. I will never have to use tyvek or poly-fill again.

I can understand killing of the mycelium and spores, but a vehicle for contaminants? That flies in the face of what Lysol is all about.

Lysol will not contaminate your grow, but Lysol, or any other petroleum-based sanitizing agent is known to mutate your carpophores, and therefore a weak bleach solution is preferred, IMHO. P.S. Tyvek sucks. Micropore (hospital paper) tape is highly recommended.

LOL! That NexCare is the same I just got. $1.77 per roll at Wallymart.
I found that two or three layers was better than one.

Well I say no you don't need Tyvek it nice but not necessary. When starting out back in the 70's all I ever did was just crack loose the lids never a problem always excellent gas exchange for years! So don't let anyone tell you it's a must. This is just newer innovations trying to improve on teks and maybe help those who grow in very dirty conditions (perhaps).
