wow...just spent forever writing a really nice post for the differences I have been seeing in the sulfur turfts in this area and I pressed continue and forgot to put the subcategory and it erased my post...tried to use the back button to bring it back but the post section was still empty, damn makes me sad. Maybe in a little bit I'll try and recreate it but a little mad right now...heres a few pictures of one of the more mature specimins...I'll edit this post in a few hours and make it how I had it before..well here you go for now.

Yea these mushrooms are crazy I think they are just a type of Sulphur Tuft I've seen them in so many different forms. I've seen same size mushrooms coming out of the same pinset being completely bell shapped. The stems on these are hollow but are really strong. I've been watching a long row of them survive through some really dry periods. The same patch has been gowing strong since the end of january.
I just went out recently because of the rain we have been having just incase a Cyan decided to pop up but with no luck. Next fall watch for me. I've been looking for new spots to look and have come across a ton of spots that look perfect for cyan growth if the conditions were right. Also, I have been seeing a lot of rhizmorphic(sp) mycellium throughout a lot of bark beds/douglar firs. The mushroom I posted also appears to have rhizmorphic mycellium..atleast thats what I find when I dig under them.

I too detest that friggin subcategory button. I have lost some really cool waxing poetical comments due to backspacing when it tells me to and forgeting to save the text. It really irritates me

That's happened to me too! Had some long drawn out posts get lost.
But without all the info one has to do some guessing.
Anyways that looks like it could be an agaricus or stropharia, but I'm not sure. Agaricus species will have a dark brown spore print while stropharia can have black, very dark brown, purplish black, or purplish brown spore prints...
If you explain exactly what habitat it was found in this would help.

What does the spore print color come out to?
It may require very careful examination. Keep in mind there's a complex of dark colors with only slight differences that can be hard to differentiate. Especially under certain lighting.

The gill attachment doest really look like what I would consider typical in Agaricus which are noted for having free or nearly free gill attachment? especially in mature specimens like the one in the photo. A spore print would be nice. georgem

Good point. I didn't even see those last 2 pics last time... wtf. I think the browser stopped cause I remember something didn't look right. Anyway there are a lot of mushrooms that can share general appearance. Even with a spore print it could be difficult to be too sure.

Yeah, probably best to copy it all, I do that when I remember. Browser could crash too, then there it goes. I've had everything get lost upon submitting it before. All kinds of crazy stuff has happened and I've lost posts. That one time the site went down and everyone lost a bunch of posts sucked. I had some really detailed threads that got lost forever cause the database got corrupted and like a few days worth of posts across the entire board got wiped out.

The spore print came out green, keep in mind im partially color blind and had no one around for a second opinion...but I really think its green. Yeah it tends to grow in wood chips or around wood...ive seen them growing out of a pile of twigs also. All shapes all sizes seems like this mushroom can look many many different ways throughout its life. Yeah I had a really detailed indetification post but after I lost it I kinda lost my ambition to make a new one...sry guys

Green!? Whoa.. there is a green spored mushroom Chlorophyllum molybdites but yours bears no resemblance to it.
It's hard to imagine you specimen dropping green spores.
Sorry to hear that you are partially color blind That can make things hard.
Wood chips eh? Hmm, perhaps it could be an agrocybe then..

I say they should just make it default to no category. Instead of having it start on "please choose" or whatever it is... I can see that by making you pick a category, it would encourage people actually using the categories though by making them choose.. losing a posts sucks though.

Probably is an agrocybe then, I'd have to go with that as final guess.

Yeah by the look of those bottom pictures id say you are right, those look just like the small ones. Sorry for all the confusion I'll make sure to get a second opinion before I post...unless I absolutely can't wait . Its nice to be able to put a name to that mushroom since it's everywhere I go! I usually try and bring a friend with me when I go out to confirm colors but if none are around that ain't gonna stop me :P but don't worry I'll always get a second opinion on anything I plan to eat and I'll make sure to post it here before even if everything seems to match perfectly. Thanks again!
edit: Agrocybe looks like a big genus with small changes in appearance to all of them...no wonder they never look quite the same theres quite a few in that patch that are the same size as this one but perfectly bell shaped, its pretty interesting, but I still hate them.
