Maggots and Pan. Cyans.
    #5356453 - 03/02/06 06:21 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I really need to find out about Maggots and Shrooms. Me and a friend found a nice amount of Pan. Cyans last night and after drying them for 9 hours and then putting them in an air-tight container when they were still fairly moist (yes I know, very bad mistake) I came home to notice about 100 little maggots crawling around in the container.

The shrooms have blued quite alot (pretty obvious since I left them moist in an air-tight container for 8 hours) which I'm not worried about, I'm worried about eating them after finding maggots in the container. Since the finding of maggots I've taken them out of the container, cleaned them of all visible maggots and put them back in-front of the fan for further drying.

Are they going to be safe to eat? They don't appear to have rotted at all and the smell is pretty normal, just mainly a lot of bluing from leaving them moist in that container.

Hey, I have picked Copelandia shrooms for 20 years and never once did I or my friends ever find larvae from Copelandia species.

If the shrooms had dried, And as you a say you put them in an air-tight container (my god, I can't breath. I am trapped in an air-tight container). Wow a miracle. Personally, there would not be any maggots crawling around if they were in an air-tight container.

So who knows what you picked.
Besides, they are nothing more than good protein. Eating them, if they were really there, would not be harmful to you. But harmful to them little fellas when you crunch them between your teeth. Ouch they scream as you bite them. They scream because that hurts.

Going off topic a bit here but since you have 20 years experience with Copes then your the right person to talk to. Do you have any specific drying and storing methods for Copes? Whenever I get a nice amount I lay them flat and spread out on newspaper and stick them in front of the fan for atleast 24 hours. I find that even after 12 hours in front of the fan they are still not as dry as they can be. Once they are nice and dry, I then put them in an air-tight glass/container along with 3-4 3cm x 3cm packs of silica gel. I assumed that 3-4 packs of desiccant would be plenty for only 5-6 dried grams of the Meanies.

Also, do you have any pics of dried Copes? I haven't seen a pic of any dried Meanies yet and I want to know if what my end result is, is a good result that will preserve a strong potency for awhile. Thanks in advance.

Part of the process of drying copes involves picking the mushooms in a proper manner and protecting them form damage by human handling and how yu carry the pag of shrooms in your hand when you are pickign them.

One is that you never squeeze the stem. The mushroom will lift right out of the ground without squeezing it. This is how one would properly handle the shroom when lifting it from the ground. Then you polace them in a paper bag carefully. The secret is in carrying the bag withour moving a single mushroom in the bag while trans[porting the bag around the field where you are picking the shrooms.

You keep the bag open for airflow and carry it as if it were a cup of hot coffe and you do not want to spillt he hot coffee on you hand so you are careful not to move the bag so the mushroom sremain undisturbed in your bag.

When you get home witrh your bag of shrooms, you cut open the bag downt he sides to expose the shrooms. Then lift each shroom by the edge of the cap so as not to cause any more oxidation which may or may not have occured while picking the shrooms.

Then you lay them down on newspaper, either under your bed or on a shelpf ina n open area. You do not have to put a fan ont hem directly. Just room air. They should dry completely within 24 hours of time.

Here is an image of some in hawaii being dried.

Also go to the Copelandia pages at mushroom John's Shroom World and see his Thai collections in plastic trays and see how not blue the specimens are. That is the condition of how your shrooms should look when you bring them home to dryu them. I also use this method for drying edibles such as chantrelles and other shrooms, although I only usually puick edibles for what I need to eat.

Those are drying copes.

HEre is a tray of good conditioned copes. observe that I left a bit of manure on the bottom of the stems. Tha majority was removed when picking. I use my last two fingers and place the bottom of the stem between those two fingers and flick off the majority of the manure, but without squeexing the stem. Remember you do not want it to blue. After the shrooms, all laid oout singularly on paper, have dried completely, you can then dust off with yuor fingers the remioaing manured powder on the bottom of the stems and then store them in a place with no light or hot conditions. In a glass jar with a cork top or similar storage device.

See what nice looking fresh specimens those are?
