a few general questions...

hello everyone im a complete newbie in the mycelium culture. just getting prepared for my first grow. im going to follow the "PF Tek for Simple Minds" found here http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pf_en.htm i have read a fair bit of info around, but still have a few simple questions.
i have read that to sterilise the inoculation jars you must boil them in a large pot or in a pressure cooker. i do not have a pressure cooker, so was thinking of just using a pot. how have peoples experiences of contamination been with this method. it is worth my while spending the extra on a pressure cooker? how many jars could you fit in an 8lt cooker? 14lt?
is one spore print enough to inoculate more than one jar? or is it one print per syringe per jar? can i use the syringe more than once if i am makeing it from prints by sterilising it?
thanks for all your help

I had 100% no contams in my pre-pc days. Steam sterelizing PF cakes is not a problem. Of course a Pressure Cooker would be preferred. If it is a hobby you plan to pursue for future months/years, then yes a PC is quite the thing to have.
Depends on your jars. Most pressure cookers/canners list what will fit.
Yes a spore print can inoculate more than one jar. I suggest looking into liquid cultures (LC). http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...4ad3571e088a270
Sterelize your syringe for repetitive use by boiling it, or sucking up boiling water.
Really, just lurk around the shroomery more. All your questions have been answered in the past and can be accessed without asking anyone.
Edit: I found my 21qt Pressure cooker at a flea market. $7. If you play your cards right, it's not a big investment.

As long as the jars are boiled properly, it won't be a problem. I think PF tek jars aren't as fullproof as what grain teks call for, but the verm will give good results so long as it's not disturbed. Besides, if you buy a PC, you're open to other, better yielding teks.
As for prints, I'd suggest starting with syringes. Prints can be used to make many syringes, but the process is a PITA in my opinion. Prints have their use, but for me, it's much easier to use a syringe to make a liquid culture.
Syringes can be used again and again provided they're sterile.

thanks for your replys guys...
i think i will have a first try just with boiling the jars for sterilisation, then invest in a PC when i can find one for cheap.
i live in australia where it is not possible to purchase pre-filled syringes. and just as hard to find prints. once i have my 1st successfull grow i will be able to make my own prints hey... can u pls give me a link for liquid culture? and what are the advantages? im sure i can find it myself tho... thanks again

Well, with a print, you could scrape a very small ammount into a liquid growth medium. In a week, the spores will have germinated and colonized a good part of the solution. You can draw syringes from that, and you'd still have the majority of your print left.
If the print is "dirty" you can transfer some spores to an agar plate, and extract a non contaminated piece of mycelium to the liquid growth media and get your liquid culture that way.
