Opinion of my first casings (pics)
    #5354232 - 03/01/06 05:08 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Here are two casing. One is rye, the other is millet. These are my first.
History:
Colonized and cased at 86F. Casing is 50/50+. Placed into incubator when mycelium began peeking out in the valleys of the casing layer at 74-76F.

Here they are now about five days incubation:

The first one looks ready to pin but I noticed that the edges are pulling from the side of the tray.
The second one looks like it might have over-lay.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

You have misting lightly all along right? 5 days is time you can start looking for pins, I myself would suggest several very light mistings over the next couple of days. Misting should be directed upward so that the mist falls and the best sprayers to use are the Multi Purpose Pump Sprayers these create an almost fog type spray when adjusted properly. When misting just give 2-4 squirts and let it be for a couple of hours and repeat again this will bring up the moisture content up to optimum slowly and should kick those pins into gear, now once you start seeing any tiny white dots (primordia) stop misting until you see some of these have grown and developed red heads (caps) this will indicate that your pins are set and very light misting can resume once again. When you get the chance read my pinning strategy to get a much better understanding of the hobby. GL bro

Thanks hyphae.

Actually, my set up should eliminate the need for misting. My terrarium has a Perlite humidification layer with a fish tank heater buried in it. Keeps it right at 74-76F and the walls always have condensation. Heres some pics.

I thought about misting but avoided it because the casing layer was glistening with moisture. I am a little conserned that RH might be too high after reading your pinning strategy. What do you think?

If your casings surface stays glistening then you may have to look into increasing your FAE slightly by running an airstone (wand) under the perlite, A pump and wand are fairly cheap and highly effective. GL

Cool. I just happen to have one of those. They do stay wet so I'll give it a try.

Thanks

If your RH is above 85 to 90% and your FAE is low, you may want to watch out for overlay if you are using casings. High RH near 100% for cakes is fine.. But not for casings.

Update with some myco porn:

Switched chambers. This one doesn't have Perlite. Just a mist bottle and a florescent plant spectrum light. It keeps it at around 75F. This post began on the 1st.

When you have overlay to the extent of shymanta in this thread, you are basically just putting on another substrate layer. Looks like typical coco coir casing to me which do not work as casings most of the time. If that is what you are shooting for, a 100% overlaid casing, don't bother with a casing. You are wasting time. Just lay the substrate and fruit out.

Alright, so what do you case with if not the coco coir?

use peat and verm, people have been using it a whole hell of a lot longer than that coir crap, i really dont get how coir ever got thought it be a good idea for a casing, well i do, some people tried it and got it to work okay, but probably have an extermely clean area and have quite a good technique in initiating pinning, for everyone else new trying this for the first time, they should never use coir, it almost always ends up with overlay, or contams before it even gets to that point, if you insist on using coir, use it as an extra moister reservior in your substrate, not your casing. check out the 50/50+ verm/peat tech on the main page under casings.

Coco coir is a relatively new substance for casings which is why it's not mentioned in mushroom growing books. It works to some extent, but as we see in this thread, it overlays very easily. I would call it a casing for very advanced growers since otherwise you're just going to overlay it. If you search, I have an entire thread covering an experiment showing the results I had with it versus traditional peat moss-based casing using the exact same substrate in the same growing chamber. The results were dramatically in favor of the peat-moss-based casing.

Speaking of which I recommend about 50% peat moss, 50% vermiculite, some aragonite sand (find at any salt water fish store), and some agricultural lime (not hydrated lime, not dolomite). A good mix--not a magic formula, just a decent mix--is approximately the 50/50 Tek:

1 1/4 cups agricultural lime (NOT hydrated lime and not dolomite--read the label)
15 cups Sphagnum Peat Moss (get real Sphagnum)
15 cups vermiculite (coarser type is best)
Optional 2 to 4 cups aragonite sand (totally optional)

Mix it up, pressure cook or microwave it (3 1/2 minutes for 3 times of full), let it cool, and watch it work wonders.

I mist every time I walk by the chamber. That's about five or six times a day. And i mist the hell out of it before I go to sleep. Should I mist more? Like every two hours or every hour?

These casings are 50/50+. I put them into the fruiting chamber before they had any overlay; just white spots peaking out here and there. It just kept colonizing even when I took the heat away. It went down to around 62F. for a few days and kept going.

Do you think a sprinkle of casing will help with humidity or is that a no no at this point?

Wow, those are some drastically....unique casings. It's my first time with casings right now as well, so I don't know what to expect from my first try. The second looks like it's got some monster fatties.
