Why does DMT exist in nature?
    #535412 - 01/29/02 10:34 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

It is a plausible theory that psychedelic mushrooms produce psilocybin as a type of poison in order to deter predators from eating them (not a very good explanation IMO but at least its plausible). Why then do a large number of phylogenically unrelated plants produce n,n-DMT, which is inactive orally. An animal that happened to eat that plant would feel no pharmacological effects, so it cannot be a predator deterrent. Do we have any theories as to how this could have evolved? To me this points suspiciously to having been introduced from the outside, perhaps as a catalyst to accelerated human spiritual evolution. Does anyone have any other explanations?

Don't think the psilocybin poison theory is too plausible at all, sheep will eat psilocybin mushrooms to the exclusion of all other food sources so it obviously isn't too much of a deterrant (to mammals at least!)

As for DMT being present in plants and human brains etc. It's mind-boggling. No idea but i don't think any theory is too outlandish. Could be spacemen, could be "god", could just be a coincidence.

well...cocaine is here, heroin, pot, mdma, i dont know we got alot of drugs, even ones not used for recreation...maybe medical needs. The fact is there are some chemicals and compounds that fuck with us, and this one happens to fuck with us also?

They use if for some as yet unknown internal purpose.

Why just select DMT? There are millions of plant compounds about which botanists understand very little. It would take a lifetime of study to understand the function of even a few of them.

To me this points suspiciously to having been introduced from the outside, perhaps as a catalyst to accelerated human spiritual evolution.
From the outside of what and by whom? You are making a quantum leap here based on nothing at all except for your fanciful thinking. A chemical molecule does not have a motivation.

Do a search on Dennis McKenna (Terrence's genius brother) and you may find something as this is his field of research.
