A few years ago a buddy and myself purchased some mushrooms that were the best that I have ever eaten in my life. They were all about an inch tall and about half an inch thick with a very thick stem that went right up into the cap. The cap didnt over hang the stem at all. The stems were all white and the caps were a nice orange color. Where these just large abhorts that we bought or was it some sort of strain? If anyone knows what I am talking about I would love to try grow those mushroom for that experience again.

or maybe PF standard.
Either way for it to have been that small a cap on top of a thick stem I lean towards you having found a good potent batch of Penis Envy.
And irregardless even mushies of a certain strain aren't guaranteed to be more potent a large list of factors come into play.
Spawn material, Cake or Bulk, Was Poo Used, was it cased, was it fruited, right, picked at the proper maturity, sooo many factors, and on some of them people seem to vary in opinion (like picking time)

I'd say there were just mushrooms picked before fully maturing. It'll be impossible for anyone to tell you what strain they were.

They also could have been picked early.
Do a little searching on strains, You will find out that there are many different opinions. Some feel that all cubensis are the same. Some feel they aren't.
Some people feel that picking them when they are small also leads to more potent fruits per gram. This is another matter of opinon.
But what most knowledgeable people will tell you is that the best thing you can do for potency is to use a good substrate. Aged horse poo being one of the best and most wildly available.
Of course you could try to grow a different species of mushrooms like pan cyans. But then your opening a whole new can of worms.
