More Poo Talk
    #5353441 - 03/01/06 12:41 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Im planning on using a 50/50 mix of either poo/straw or poo/vermiculite in a double tub. I have a couple of questions though.

1. What brand of H.Poo should I get?(I live in Michigan and the only source I could think of would be Lowes or Home Depot)
2. What should I look for when buying? What should be in/not in it?
3. What brand of straw? What should I look for?
4. Is a 50/50 mix with vermiculite or straw better for a double tub?
5. Can I save time and mix the straw/poo and pasturize that way?(Instead of doing each seperately)

I'm sure Ill think of a couple more in a little bit, but thanks for the help in advance. If you have any pics of the poo or straw, that would help out a lot.

I dont think you'll find horse poo in the store, most likely you'll just run across bovine manure. Black kow has gotten numerous decent reviews from members.

TennStud then, huh? I was going to order that but I'd rather not have to wait for it. I've read that just straw makes some pretty good yeilds. Is that comparable to h.poo?

Well, if I decided to call a horse stable, what should I look for when I'm scoping out the poop? What should the texture be like? Color? All that good stuff.

Out of 6 store bought composts, Black Kow was one of the worst in my experiment. But as has been said, the contents of a particular brand will vary from region to region.

In my limited experience, straw alone will produce about 50 times more shrooms by weight than using a 50/50 mix of straw and store bought compost.

No shit, huh? I was going to ask you these questions in your thread, but I didnt want to hijack it. Your probably already answered it, but what brand DID work(poo)? What brand of straw worked for you? Thanks bro

You want to find the stuff thats been out in the air the longest, it should have a fibrous consistency and be nice and dry to the point of crumbling into dust in your hands. You dont want any types of ammonia smells as well, be on the look out for that. Stay away from the greener stuff and look for the muffins or piles that have a lot of firefang on them (a white beneficial bacteria which looks sorta like cobweb).

Try to find the piles that have been sitting in the sun the longest, hopefully you havent had too much rain or snow as this will hinder your search for usable poo.

Easiest way to go is with tenn stud, if you pick up your own you have to pasteruize and hydrate it yourself. This can be a long, smelly, and semi nasty project.

If you're going to the stables. Just ask them where their pile is.
It will already have straw and or wood shavings of some sort in it.
Find the oldest, driest looking stuff.

Think most people with horses are just willing to give their poo away? I don't see why not,

and on hay- can it be brebought in stores or should I hunt down some locales for a portion of a bail or something?

Im always the one for poo and heres why.

1.) Straw has the tendency to contaminate very easily
2.) Anything after the first flush on a straw grow is usually very shitty

Those two reasons alone are enough for me to say fuck straw and just go with the poo. I think it's easier to work with, provides better results, and gives you more in the long run then straw can.

yeah but inside the stalls they have poo under a roof. black kow has always treated me nice, no complaints on my end. personally though i would just go to a local stable i gaurentee they would be more than happy to get it off their hands. they shovel the "shit" day in and day out and if you came in and shoveled it for them and even took it away they'de prolly invite you back.

as for the straw questions mix the straw before you pasteurize it will make your life a whole lot easier. doesn't matter what kind just as long as the straw isn't growing shit already.

honestly i would go with the straw over vermiculite. i only use vermiculite in cow poo becuz it tends to be runny and it needs some body to it.

This is what it should look like:

It should not look like a pile of dirt with straw mixed in. Larger stables will use bulldozer type equipment to pick manure up and end up grabbing a bunch of dirt in the process. Your absolute best bet is to find a stable that does boarding but is small in scale. Most of these will require the owner to keep their own stables which means hand shoveling of the manure. They will usually have a central location where the manure is stored.

Say you're going to start a compost pile so that it'll be ready for your garden by spring. It takes around a month for stuff to compost down so it'd be a valid excuse.

Okay so theoretically, I am going to go to the stable and look for a pile of VERY dry poo. I should try to look for some with a white mold(fire-something). And it should NOT smell like ammonia. How much should the mold be overtaking the poo? Shit, I can tell this is going to be a blast

Also, I've been hearing things about leeching.
Does this mean just to let it sit in a tub and be exposed to the elements? Should the lid be open?

Firefang isn't really a mold. It's really just a white discoloration of the poo. And it doesn't really matter how much it's overtaking it. If you see the poo is nice and dry and has like white on it, then it's good to go.

Leeching just means it has sat out in the elements (i.e. precipitation and sun) long enough to have been rinsed of most of the ammonia, then dried back to a fibrous state. If you were to leech your own poo, just spread it out on a tarp and either soak it every couple of days or let it get rained on several times.
