If McCain had been elected he would have been the best president in about 100 years.
I think the presidency itself needs to be stripped of power, about half of it.

And that will never happen.
I think McCain will run and win. I will go to war with that man anyday, anywhere, anytime, against anyone.

I second this one.
It's nice to see a lot of agreement between the left and the right in this thread. I don't think Hillary stands a snoball's chance in hell to win, unless in reality presidents really are selected fraduelently. She could never pull off a succesfull campaign because she would always be on the defensive ropes.

Most state and local authority should be reduced and eliminated as well.

I have always liked McCain, but I wonder how stable he is. Of course, comparing to the previous two presidents, I suppose it really doesn't matter... Hmmm... McCain and Powell would be an interesting pairing.

You say that, but its this two party system that rules out all the extremities. If it wasn't like this, and a winner was decided by the highest percentage of the population, this country would go to hell. With this system, it wouldn't be suprising to see an extreme Christian conservative win by a small percentage of say 20 percent
Look at the elections France had a couple years ago, they had the system you want, a system where there are as many candidates as needed and winner of the highest percentage takes all. A candidate, who's party focused on kicking out the jews from France won 18 percent of the votes I beleive. It may not seem like much, but the actual winner of the election won by only 21 percent.
The 2 party system rules out all of these extremists, without it we would be vulnerable to theocracy, or radicalism, or god knows what. Having 2 parties forces those main two parties to be more towards the center, as opposed to far left or far right.

England and Canada both seem to be doing quite well without a winner-take-all system.

What system are you referring to? The 2 party system or the electoral college in general?

I'm referring to the two-party system, or more accurately the system by which the winner takes all, as opposed to proportional representation.

I really don't know enough about Canadian or British government to rebuttle
But as for proportional representation, thats the system where the a candidate receives the same electoral percentage of that state as the percentage of votes he received in the state correct?

More accurately, it's where the party recieves a number of seats that is proportional to the percentage of votes it gets.

The problem is not with the two-party system, but rather with the way the two-party system is used to circumvent the checks and balances between the various branches of government. This happens when the president looks after his political parties agenda rather than bettering the lives of the people he was hired to serve. This happens when the supreme court justices protect their political parties viewpoint rather than protecting the constitution. This happens when congress ignores the problems of the nation and focus their energies towards self gain.
