Timeline for Straw Bulk

Ok, I don't want this post to be misconstrued as 'impatient newb' which i'm certainly not. More a poll of opinion so that I can choose the best course of action. I've got box of straw inoculated at about 1:4 ratio with WBS. Dimensions 10x13x1.5". I was hoping for more depth, but turns out I didn't make enough spawn. I think it should be fine for my purposes though. The aim of the box is to produce at least 12-15g (dry) of shrooms by the 17th of march, which is exactly 17 days from today! I've had yields of twice that from much smaller rye casings in about the same amount of time so I think that's reasonable. Now, the real question is; will it colonize fast enough for me me to case and fruit within that time?? I'm thinking it needs at least another 5 days to fully colonize. I've never used bulk straw before so this is all pretty new to me. Anybody got any suggestions for a good casing mix for fast fruiting? I was thinking a thin 50/50 peat/vermiculite. Any thoughts?

probably more along the lines of 2-3 days for full colonization if its truely 1:4, and you stay at optimal temps (85.6f works nice). Then 2 days for a casing layer maybe even 36hrs cause of the low depth you'll likely use in this situation. 3-9days to pin 2-5days to maturity dependent on FAE...
8 1/2 days - 19 days... you should be good, just gotta keep on it so its at the lower end
happy trails and GL

OOh, so it could well be possible then! I tend to err on the cautious side rather than being over-optimisitic. That said, my conditions are not exactly ideal, with about 5 degrees of temp fluctuation over the course of the day. I'll keep this thread updated as much as possible.

Make sure there is sufficient weight pressing down on the straw as it colonizes. It needs to be tightly packed in order for the myc to colonize straw properly!

Well i've got the straw pretty well packed down, it seems to be colonizing nicely. I think i've been worrying a bit too much, looks like the myc's taking off this evening. To me it looks like another 5-days to fully colonize. Anyway, check the pic and see what you think.

Did you cut up the straw into smaller pieces, it doesn't really look like it in the picture. I usually go for about 1-2" pieces, but i think the smaller the better. GL to ya!

Your spawn ratio can take 5-7 days at room temp (72), less at higher temps. A half inch casing should be good to go in 3-4 days. You're looking at around a week+/- for a good pinset, and 4 days or so to maturity. If you must have them in 17 days, forgo the casing layer, but that's not a gaurantee, and will lower your yield (though you'll probably still get your target).

The straw I used is pre-pastuerized and shredded ready for use in small animal hutches. The size of the strands vary from 1/2 to 2.5" or thereabouts. I got the straw at a petstore which I think is great value considering there's no need for me to put any real effort into preparing it. Check out the pic of the straw ball I made with a 1/4pt of WBS spawn and unpasteurised (by me) straw. The main casing is making good progress as well as you can see in the pics below. I moved it above my terrarium overnight and the higher temps seem to have helped somewhat. Looks like my targe might just be doable now!

New Pictures Update [Re: Jaicen]

Hey guys, just a quick update to show how much progress has been made. I'm quite amazed by the speed of colonization of the straw, it's very very rapid. Only the very edges of the corners are not colonized on top, though it is colonized underneath the uppermost layer (about 5mm down). Should be completely done tomorrow at this rate. I'm wonering if it would be helpful to case it now, and let it incubate a bit longer, or if I should wait for it to be fully colonized before casing. Either way, looks like i'm still on target. What do you guys think??

let it totally colonize before you put your casing on, maybe if it will be 100% done tomorrow just case it tomorrow night and giv'er
i was amazed at the last little straw banana-bread pans i did, 3 days totally colonized. had them stacked on top of each other, good pressure i guess does help alot!
you should totally be able to hit your targets of time and weights. but thats just my guess
cheers

Dont case it.
Theres no need with straw. You wont risk missing your target date that way. just fruit it. you should easily crush your target weight.

Well, as it turns out my target date has been shifted back by another two weeks. I guess I can relax a little bit more.
