Hi all i am new to this site, i have recently started growing shrooms and the previous set i grew i had no problems and even exceeded the expected crop weight. Those were hutuala mexicana(sp?), i have now started upon the B+ strain it is currently in the first stage spores in the rye bag and it has gone complelty white. However there is a large very dark green patch as well of which i can only assume is mould?
i did nothing different from the last time and if anyone could help i would be greatful.

did you wipe the needle with alcohol???
did you wipe your inoculation point on the bag?? if not you very well could have pushed the mold spores that were on the bag, into the bag and then launched them when you injected your spores.
did you buy you syringe or make it?

i cleaned everything like last time and all the products were bought. I also seem to be finding a good place for this stage to take place as it takes upto 2-4 weeks longer then recomended in the instruction to reach being completely white. Is this due to the general ambient temp being winter?

temp has a major effect on growth. if you can keep the bags or anything your incubating at around 82-86 degrees farenheit. colonization should only take 3 weeks at most.

i had a heating pad at one time. they create hot spots but they work. i had mine on a timer to maintain a good temp without going too high. what's even cheaper is staring you right in the face. your monitor, computer monitor stays at a good temp. just place it on top of the monitor and wait.

i'm form england mate there no chance at this time the temp would be sufficent, a good idea for the summer though. i had to cultivate the the last lot using a radiator near a window which worked very nicely the bag exceded the expected amount. I have somewhere a naturnal heat pad for babies which i gonna dig out as one of my ex misses pulle done out of the bin at hosptial, bout20 of them all working what a waste.

If you have a lizard heater, go get a cooler and put it all in there. Some stores carry a dimmer that you plug in the wall, then you plug your lamp or whatever in the dimmer's plug, then there is a cord attached with a control on it. Just watch your thermometer and adjust the dimmer control.
Clean the hotrock with bleach because they must harbor bacteria like hell.
