Effecient Heating
    #535069 - 01/29/02 02:57 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

So if one has a grow chamber, about 4' high, 2' deep, and 3' wide, with a well insulated back and sides, adequate humidity, and air exchange, how could one keep this at a constant temperature like 75-78 degrees, without using a shitload of power? It is a well sealed envrionment, and should hold heat well, but it is in a location which is only about 60-65 degree's most of the time. Something small, not very power consuming, but capable of maintaining a constant level of moderately high temperatures.

Please, anyone have any ideas?

if you go to a pet store you should be able to find a fish tank heater get one of those put it in a container of water and crank it up if you're container is well insolated then you should have plenty of heat from that, also you can add a bubbler to that and you have a humidity solution as well.

Id go with that Idea...
They are really inexpensive, and they really work great. Ive been using mine for heating, and its perfect. You can use a heating pad, but I dont think that would be able to heat up your large container that well.

Just get a big jug, like a gallon jug and stick the heater in there, it will work...

And you think a fish tank heater in a jug of water would work better?

hmm.. ok.. well the heating pad is a no, as is a space heater.. too much juice, and the pad is too hard to control.. the tank heater sounds good.. I was thinking of some way of heating the air from the cool mist humidifier as it travels through piping... hmm..

You could possibly heat the water in the cool mist to the desired temperature with a aquarium water heater, just make sure the water does not run out.

I have a fruit chamber that big and all I use is 2 50watt heaters, one on each side for even heat distribution (no cold areas) ....I find that these heaters let off alot of humidity as well, so I just run my air exchange 24/7. The heaters kickout once they reach the temp you desire (gotta fiddle around with them a bit to get them perfect)..and since they kick out at a certain temp they save you alot of power by not running all the time....just have to check on them couple times a week to make sure the waters nice and full in each jar so you dont set a fire, break the heater or something

With both heaters going I get 99-100% Humidity and a nice 69-75degrees. Since I have casings I dont need all that moisture, so I keep my airpump going, that brings the humidity down to 92% and thats perfect for me.

Have you considered putting your terrarium on top of an
old waterbed heater? The trick would be to keep the temp
probe against the bottom(inside) to keep it from getting hot
enough to melt anything. I just though of this today because
I noticed I had an extra one. Since heat rises, if you find the
right temp for the bottom the rest will follow. I think I'll do some
tests in an unheated outbuilding before I risk any mushrooms
on it. Just a thought. Peace.

WakingUpLate,

Yes i have considered using a whole water bed....water left in it and all.
I have a spare room with a Queen size waterbed in it....lolz

Stick some fruiting chambers right on the waterbed....then getting the water bed to the right temp.....so that the inside of the fruiting chambers would be 73 degrees.
I could get 20 - 31 gallon Rubbermaid totes on the one waterbed.
But i have no need for so many mushrooms.
So i might try doing 4 totes...for casings.

I was talking this over with EatMeKid....we like the idea.

If i do decide to try this....i'll make a post.

A friend mentioned that there is a kind of tape which can be heated via electric current, and is used to wrap around piping... so that could work well for heating the pipe which the cool mist sends air through to the cabinet..
