Any input greatly appreciated. It's my second grow so I'm still a little rusty but this is looking a lot better than my first casing ;-). Should I patch or isn't it heavy enough?

How much myc should be showing through and how thick should I let it get? It seems to grow more with every passing day and I'm afraid of overlay. I still have yet to master the misting and fanning, let alone any deep scratching :-P

looks like crap!~
if that looks better than your first one... God have mercy on your soul!~
lolzz
---
When the mycelium first starts to come through the casing layer...
you fruit the damn thing!~
Your pinset isn't going to be the greatest with what you have now.
You can either patch it again...
or you can leave it alone and have spuratic pinning.

this brings up an interesting question. do you spawn and incubate, or spawn, case and incubate?
my first 2 casings i spawned cased and incubated. of course i couldnt tell how well the myc ran the substrate except by seeing if any myc appeared on top of the casing layer. both of the casings are coming along great and i have a decent pin set on them. most casing pics ive seen had myc on top of teh casing layer, but mine are pinning without haveing myc ontop...
the 3rd casing i started incubating 4 days ago without a casing layer. im gonna case it today. im theorizing that by letting the myc run the substrate, then casing, they myc will all "explore" the casing layer at the ssame time, which would result in them pinning relativly evenly.
-------------------- i can speel... im just too lazy to sppelcheck. My first trip (good read) - Speed Leaching Poo! - My Second Trip (with art)

Either uneven substrate layer, uneven mycelium development or uneven casing layer. Just let it fruit noncontiguously and try your luck at your next one.

Well that's the thing, after taking it out of incubation myc was poking through so I threw it into the FC. I'm giving it humidity, fresh air, 12/12 ight, temps in the low 70's and it's still growing like it's eating the casing layer. What's up? How can I ensure a better pinset on my next casing because it's almost done incubating and it's ready to be fruited.

Reading and understanding a pinning strategy are two seperate things. You'll get it sooner or later. Remember the words coincidence and timing and peat based casings these all contribute to consistantly prolific pinsets.

How does it look now? I've included a pic of my second casing as well.

That second casing could use a patching for sure as that center potion will pin prematurely guaranteed. How long have they been in the FC?

there are actually benefits of doing different things different ways but thats optimal... Through a few different experiments i came up with a weird tek that calls for the casing layer about 3 days after being in the FC...
