PC alternatives?
    #5350495 - 02/28/06 06:10 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I have heard of just boiling jars in a regular pot w/ a lid but i have heard mixed results from this process. I was wondering if anyone has ever used a rice cooker. I just found one in my closet and was curious if anyone has experimented with one? If I could use this I would rather do that as opposed to buying a PC. But if I have to I will buy a PC. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I so far have only used boiling water in a big pot with the top on have have successfully birthed 4 cakes of mazatapec and 4 of GT. I will probably end up getting a PC sometime though. Just wanted to let you know it can easily be done.

Mushroom cultivation isn't fun for everyone. For a lot of us however, It's the funnest hobby we have ever fell into.

I suggest that this time make Pf cakes with the boiling method and see how you like it. If you wanna continue in this hobby then you NEED a PC. I suggest you get a GOOD one the first time and buy and All American of decent size. Pressure cookers with gaskets weren't made for the kind of stress we put on them. I think I'm gonna need a new gasket soon and I have only done maybe 20 pressure cooking runs.

Used to use a pc when it was still working and still got some contam with WBS. Recently making rice with a standard recipie minus a little water, then while its still hot load jars and boil for 30-40 min. covered at a rolling boil.
Usually use a spoonful of spawn but spores work well also. Only have problems with the open air gtg transfer and not the sterilization. And that is still rare using the oven tek.

There some things you can skimp on, a PC is not one of them if you want to be successful, get one, doesn't have to be the most expensive one. You can find some fairly cheap probably.

NO!

The only way to heat water INSIDE the jars much past 100 degrees Celsius is to have it under PRESSURE. A pressure cooker is your only feasible option.

Do you think it would be possible to bake dry WBS in the oven at some temp. to sterilize it, and then right when you open the oven (so the hot air updraft keeps contams out) add the WBS to a pot of boiling water and follow the easy soak and simmer tek. Would this sterilize the WBS properly? (assuming the jars and lids are sterilized, etc.)

Just wondering, im planning on buying a Pressure Cooker before everybody starts telling me to do so, but in the meantime i was wondering if this would work. If so, what temp would i need to set the oven at?

i would think that baking the grain enough to sterilize them would burn them and render it useless

He's just tired of all the questions about ways to get around PC'ing grains. That's definitely understandable with all the weird ideas people keep pulling out of their ass :smirk:

If you want to do whole grains without a PC, search for "fractional sterilization". It's a PITA and will probably be all the convincing you need to buy a PC.
