just a simple question

Okay...I've looked all over this site and couldn't find my answer. Here is my question: Last night I pasturized a straw/cow dung substrate. I think that I may have added too much water. I did the "field capacity" test and a brown, thick ooze-like solution is all that squeezed out. No drips, but I KNOW that it is plenty of water. I inoculated today with the Argentina strain. I read somewhere that too much water is certain failure. Is this true? And futhermore, did I add too much water? If I did add too much water will there still be growth?

growth will be inhibbited very badly. if you knew the shit was too wet why'de you case anyway. should have just squeezed out the excess water by hand and then case.

If the water flowed out in a steady stream when you squeezed it, then it has way too much water. You said you've read plenty, so you should know that you only want drips. If it's oozing like muddy water, you're way overhydrated.

Let me explain my question a little better. The ooze that squeezed between my fingers was thick ooze, yes; but, it was not enough to fall on the ground. It just kind of came out a little and ran down my hand about an inch and then stopped. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure what to think. Horse poo is generally rather fibrous, and fibrous matter doesn't tend to turn into muddy ooze. Perhaps someone with a bit more experience can give you some advice.

Cow dung was your 1st problem.
Unwashed, It contains a LOT of goo/soup/poop.
That is why you could squeeze out cow/goo/soup/poop.
Second problem is straw. Unless composted. It doesn't hold/retain/distribute moisture well.
Third problem is the combo above, PLUS to much added moisture.
A SUBSTRATE should have the consistency of an open cell sponge. Which holds/retains moisture well. And, when squeezed gently, drips some moisture. (but, not a LOT)
I would wager, your stuff, was like mud, with a lot of stiff straw in it. (not a pretty site)
