My fruiting chamber

I was wondering if the plexiglass on my fruiting chamber is big enough for sufficient light to get through. I would have put a piece of plexiglass the full size of the lid but I forgot to get it precut and mad an ass of cutting the stuff myself.
Here she is

Cool glad to hear it because that plexiglass is a real bitch to cut straight. Plus I nearly blinded myself when I snapped it yesterday and little shards of the stuff flew into my eyes.

Should I sterilize the terranium before putting the cakes in? If so how would I go about doing it? I have some hydrogen peroxide if that will do the trick.

I covered the bottom of the terrarium with wet perlite and left it for the day but the humidity is only at 22%. Do I need to heat to perlite to build up the humidity?

You will need 3 inches of perlite I belive and it needs to be damp and ur humidity should be 90%. You should be able to smell the moisture in the air also.
Also If you can get a 60 gallon air pump and some bubble wands hook that up and add 1 1/2 inch of water to the perlite and turn that puppy on and you wont need worry about a thing.

I added over 3 inches of damp perlite but the humidity still hasnt gone up at all. I put the perlite in a colander and ran the tap over it until all the perlite was soaked then let the excess water pour out of the colander. Could the problem be theres not enough water?

Maybe your hygrometer is a piece of shit???
It looks like a big tub, i've used up to 5 inches before, like half a bag actually just to get to 95%.

Maybe your right. I accidentally left it by the fire one day and the hygrometer wasnt working for 2 weeks. Now it the numbers only pop up once in a while, I usually have to check the min/max.

I have 2 nice cakes in there at the moment. The temperature is only 65 at the moment, will the cakes still fruit if the temperature and humidity are below optimum?

Heres the terrarium with the perlite to me it doesnt look humid at all. The cakes havent changed at all since I put them in.

See the external hygrometer reader in the top left corner of the box. That should probably read alot more than 18% humidity seeing as its right on top the wet perlite shouldnt it.

I added a few glasses of water to the perlite and it went up to 28%. Plus one of the sides has drips of water on the sides. I take that as a good sign.

One of the cakes fell over and I noticed a pin popping out of the remnants of the dry verm layer.

wow... u used alot of perlite. for my first grow, i only used about 2 handfuls of perlite that was rinsed and drained. i still got really nice sized shrooms too.
i also followed the PF Tek as you did. also, a way u can measure your humidity is by how frequent water droplets fall down the sides of the tub.
the more frequent drops fall, the closer you are to 100% humidity. although, u dont want water to be dripping every 30secs.
u want droplets to fall once in a while. if u see that, you have the proper humidity.
right now, i have a plastic quart cup that filled half way with perlite that was rinsed and drained, that keeps my FC with a bunch of casings at a nice 95%. try getting a new hygrometer, i've got the 5$ at walmart.
EDIT: oh, and try rolling the cake in dry verm right after birth to have a better chance at a nice pinset, or bigger shrooms.

I dont know what the hell the problem is. I bought the biggest rubbermaid box I could find but I dumped nearly 2 bags of perlite in there. 2 bags should be enough even for a box that big. I added more water today now when I run my fingers through the perlite I can feel a little pool of water underneath it.

Unfortunately there are no drops moving at all. Most of the sides dont have any water on them at all. For some reason one side has drops of water on it but the water seems to be static. There are no drips moving.

Thanks for the advice. Im going to do that with all my cakes from now on. I dunked the cakes about 4 days ago. Is it too late to roll them in the verm by now?

Try going smaller. I only see 2 cakes in that HUGE FC you've got there. Being as large as it is, it will take longer for humidity to build up every time you check on it or fan. Try a large tupperware container or a 2 liter bottle or something.
A large tub like that is better suited for bulk growing where the substrate and casing itself will provide the humidity.

Condensation is only a sign of temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the fruiting chamber and not an indication of RH levels FYI. Also roll in dry verm then mist until nearly saturated don't leave it dry I'm sure you knew this but I'm just telling you this anyway. GL and remember mushrooms are not like us they thrive in nearly saturated environments so mist (indirectly) those cakes!!!

Yah, i had the same problem not with mushies but with my reptiles, finally I had to make a cavity under their enclosuere, and placed a heat pad under there, and kept the subsrtate moist and it kept the humidity up. youve got wet perlite, try puting a heat pad under it, or some source of heat.

Just remember you don't want temps above 77F. if you can help it.

Yeah I'm going to get a smaller transparent box because no matter how much water I pour in I cant get the humidity up to 95%.

I love it. Judging by those flushes I can see it works like a charm too. Why are the shrooms only growing out of the verm layer though?
