Shrooming vs. meditiation

I have finished about 6 months ago a course in meditation. I figured that it would be a good thing to learn and incorporate. The guy who taught is from a monastic order in NY and has like 20 years experience with meditation and teaching.
My problem is, I find meditation to be quite elementary as far as getting insight and learning about myself.
Simply put, I equate meditation with elementary school classes while shrooming is more of an advanced college level, as far as meditation/insight goes. The point of meditation is essentially nirvana, which includes complete loss of ego and seeing myself and things around me in their true state. I have experienced ego loss with shrooms but meditation doesn't seem to be able to add anything to the experience.
I discussed this point with my teacher and he stipulates that while on hallucinogens nothing is real whereas with meditation everything is real. I understand his stance, especially considering he has never taken hallucinogens before. Still, I find that shrooming is a meditative rocket while regular meditation is like crawling.
Anyone else ever compared the two?
What are your thoughts?

One is looking through the window of reality, the other is throwing a brick throught the window.
They both have their place, and can be equally enlightening.

For me, in simple terms, meditation calms me down, and turns my sense perception levels up. So once I stop meditating, the world's vibrancy shines through quite powerfully, and I live more in the moment, not worrying about shit. But I'm not a skilled meditator, I essentially use it as an occasional anti-depressant.
Whereas with mushrooms, the true perfection of the universe is revealed as veil after veil of illusion is stripped away, God's presence in me and everyone around me shows though.
Meditation, while on mushrooms, is where its at imo. The two were made for eachother.

That's an interesting combination. I've never tried to meditate while on shrooms because while shrooming I have a hard time sitting still for even 5 minutes.

you can't really compare them with terms like 'elementary' and 'college'...both will help you acheive the same thing, however meditation takes time, discipline and practice. you have to really want to acheive higher states of mind, where as mushrooms will take you there whether you want to or not. i believe they are both equally powerful...my own personal view is that psychedelics can open up a whole new spiritual realm, and a more accurate and complete view of reality, but they can also be an impediment to understanding it. i think they are great for "awakening" the mind's eye, but you have to make the decision to take it further and really learn from it. and that's what i feel meditation does.
